Traditional Easter bonfire on the West Beach of the largest East Frisian island
The Easter bonfire is one of the oldest customs in Northern Germany. In Christian interpretations, it symbolizes the resurrection of Jesus and the triumph of light over darkness. However, its roots reach further back – to pre-Christian Germanic spring fires that celebrated the sun's victory over winter. In Northern Germany, especially along the North Sea coast, the custom has been preserved in its most intense form: in many places, enormous piles of wood are prepared over weeks and lit on Holy Saturday evening.
On Norderney, the Easter bonfire holds a special tradition. The island is the largest and oldest seaside resort island in Germany – a state-recognized spa since 1797 – and cherishes its customs with the self-confidence of an island community whose identity is not new. The venue is the West Beach, the westernmost tip of the island, where the wide sandy beach opens towards the open North Sea. Here, the woodpile is erected days before Easter and lit at dusk on Holy Saturday.
The Easter bonfire is part of a broader Norderney Easter program: Special church services take place on Good Friday, the Easter bonfire on Holy Saturday, and the traditional Easter egg rolling on the West Beach on Easter Sunday (see separate festival date on April 5, 2026). Those who spend Easter on Norderney experience a unique combination of island air, tradition, and family atmosphere found nowhere else in Northern Germany.
The 2026 Easter Bonfire continues the tradition of previous years. The event is organized by Staatsbad Norderney GmbH in cooperation with the island fire department and local gastronomy.
