Traditional Schützenfest of the Hiltrup-Emmerbach marksmen's association in the south of Münster
The Emmerbacher Schützenfest is one of several Schützenfeste that shape the life of Münster's suburbs annually. The district of Hiltrup-Emmerbach is located in the south of the city, just before the Dortmund-Ems Canal border to Münsterland. From Thursday, June 4th to Sunday, June 7th, 2026, the Schützenverein Hiltrup-Emmerbach von 1971 e.V. celebrates its four-day highlight of the club year.
On Thursday, June 4th, the festival begins at 2 PM with the traditional Vogelstechen (bird shooting — the competition for the royal title) and a convivial campfire in the evening. Friday, June 5th, features the 2nd Hiltrup Flunkyball Championship at 6 PM (a modern drinking game tournament that has also established itself outside the marksmen's scene) and culminates in a tent party with a DJ. Saturday, June 6th, is the formal highlight: starting at 7 PM, the proclamation of the new King and Queen takes place, followed by the gala ball with the party band Just4you — the musical backbone of the weekend.
In the 2025–2026 marksmen's year, King Michél Hertz and his Queen Kathrin Deutschkämer reign, flanked by their court. Their reign ends on Saturday evening of the 2026 festival with the proclamation of their successors.
Unlike Carnival in the Rhineland or Oktoberfest (Wiesn) in Bavaria, the Schützenfest is the most important folk tradition in Westphalia. It combines the sporting element of shooting competitions (bird shooting or king shooting) with club life (hierarchies, uniforms, parades) and the folk festival (festival tent, music, beer, dancing). The clubs have often been active since the 19th century or earlier. The Hiltrup-Emmerbach club was founded in 1971 — a comparatively young club, but one that has firmly integrated into the regional tradition.
The Flunkyball Championship is a clear signal: Hiltrup-Emmerbach is deliberately opening the Schützenfest to younger generations. Those who love the format of festival tent, beer, bratwurst, and live band will find a relaxed, accessible version here. Münster, with its many students, benefits particularly from such events.
Hiltrup, with around 25,000 inhabitants, is the largest southern district of Münster, separated from the city center by the Dortmund-Ems Canal. The Schützenfest is one of the three or four events that sustain the social life of the district throughout the year — alongside Carnival and the Hiltruper Frühlingsfest (Spring Festival).
The 2026 edition follows the traditional Schützenfest format: King selection on Thursday, young tent party program on Friday, formal gala ball on Saturday, and family wind-down on Sunday — all at the Emmerbach festival grounds in southern Münster.
