23 Ensembles from 9 Countries — Dance, Theatre, Contemporary Circus, and Audio Walks in Public Spaces
The street theatre festival BILDSTÖRUNG is more than just "art in the open air" — it is an artistic reflection on public space, community, and urban culture. For four days, 23 ensembles and individual artists from 9 European countries will transform Detmold's city centre into a vibrant stage. Squares, streets, courtyards, parks, staircases — performances can take place anywhere. The programme ranges from short interventions to elaborate theatre productions and multi-hour audio walks.
The festival presents theatre, dance, performance, contemporary circus (cirque contemporain), audio walks, and participatory projects. German and world premieres alternate with established repertoire pieces. The curatorial line: everything must take place in public space and expose itself to this world of life.
Dance collectives from France, theatre collectives from Spain, circus companies from Belgium and the Netherlands, audio artists from Great Britain, performative initiatives from Scandinavia — the international diversity makes BILDSTÖRUNG a truly European festival. The programme and performance times will be published in detail in early 2026 on bildstoerung.net and via the Reservix booking system.
Most performances in public spaces are free of charge. Only the audio walks and some special theatre productions require tickets — tickets via AD Ticket / Reservix. BILDSTÖRUNG is therefore deliberately accessible: theatre for everyone, not just for theatre subscribers.
The festival explicitly commits to diversity: "BILDSTÖRUNG stands for diversity! We do not tolerate discrimination or harassment based on racial attributions, ethnic origin, gender, religion, disability, age, sexual identity, or any other form." A festival hotline (+49 5231 977-920) is available for help and incident reporting.
Detmold is the district capital of the Lippe district with around 75,000 inhabitants. Famous for the Landestheater Detmold, the Hermannsdenkmal, the Externsteine, and the LWL Open-Air Museum. A city with a pronounced theatre tradition — a perfect location for an international street theatre festival.
The socio-cultural centre Hangar 21 in Detmold is a partner of the festival and one of the central workshop and info point locations during BILDSTÖRUNG.
BILDSTÖRUNG 2026 continues its tradition as the most important street theatre festival in North Rhine-Westphalia. Four days in public spaces, a curated mix of established repertoire pieces and new, international productions.
Detailed programme in early 2026 on bildstoerung.net.
