22. ISFF Detmold — six days of short films from around the world
The International Short Film Festival Detmold, or ISFF for short, is one of the most important short film festivals in North Rhine-Westphalia and regularly attracts attention beyond the region. The 22nd edition runs from Monday, August 24 to Saturday, August 29, 2026, in the Lippische Residenzstadt of Detmold. The organizer is the volunteer-run Kultur & Art Initiative e.V., based at Charles-Lindbergh-Ring 10. Admission: completely free — a commitment that only a few international film festivals can maintain.
Opening — Monday, August 24, 6 PM
The festival opens on Monday, August 24 at 6:00 PM with the opening film series. The venues are spread across three culturally and historically significant locations:
- Stadthalle Detmold (Schlossplatz 7) — the central stage with main halls and festival office
- Kaiserhof+ — a second indoor venue, often used for experimental and documentary programs
- Café Cup — the Open-Air Cinema on balmy summer nights, one of the festival's most beautiful venues
This distribution across Detmold's compact city center allows for leisurely strolls between screenings — those who see a series in the Stadthalle can then walk to Café Cup for the open-air screening.
Program Structure — 10 Minutes, Four Genres
The maximum film length is strictly 10 minutes. This time limit is one of the toughest in the international short film scene and makes the Detmold program particularly dense: no tedious medium lengths, but pure short film concentrate. Four genre categories are recognized:
- Documentary — short, often personal or political documentaries
- Animation — from hand-drawn to 3D CGI
- Experimental — Video Art, Found Footage, abstract forms
- Fiction Film — short drama, short comedy, genre films
In 2026, the ISFF expects over 3,000 submissions from over 80 countries — the acceptance rate for films is in the low single-digit percentage range, meaning the program is highly curated.
“Films for Everyone” — Radical Accessibility
The festival motto is “Films for Everyone”. Specifically: audio description for visually impaired audiences, subtitles for hearing-impaired audiences, free admission for all screenings, hybrid format with online streaming for those not physically present. This inclusive approach makes the ISFF one of the most accessible film festivals in Germany. Those who want to watch from Bremen or Munich can do so digitally — a rare offering at film festivals in Germany.
Program Beyond Films — Concerts, Workshops, Exhibitions
In addition to film screenings, the ISFF offers a dense accompanying program: concerts, multimedia exhibitions, workshops (screenwriting, editing, animation for beginners and professionals), parties, and art installations. This breadth makes the festival the closing summer event for Detmold's cultural scene.
Detmold — Lippische Residenzstadt with Theater Culture
Detmold, with around 75,000 inhabitants, is the district capital of the Kreis Lippe and is home to the renowned Landestheater Detmold, the LWL Open-Air Museum, and the University of Music. This cultural density forms the natural ground for a short film festival: an experienced audience, proximity to the university (animation and film students), and a cultural habitus accustomed to the avant-garde. Anyone visiting Lippe in the summer should include the ISFF in their plans.
Submissions 2026
Submission deadline for filmmakers: May 18, 2026. Films must have English subtitles (or be in English), maximum length 10 minutes, genre selectable. Submission platform via fest-der-filme.de or Festagent.
