Jazz Open Air in the Monastery Ruins — since 1981
Since 1981, the Eldena monastery ruins south of Greifswald have been transformed into an open-air jazz festival for two summer evenings. International artists, established German jazz greats, and new formations from the scene meet in a unique setting: Gothic brick walls, the evening light that makes the bricks glow, the summer wind of Vorpommern.
The Eldena monastery ruins are the remains of a 12th-century Cistercian abbey. Caspar David Friedrich, born in Greifswald in 1774, captured it in about twenty paintings, making it a symbol of German Romanticism. Today, it serves as an open-air venue. In case of rain, the organizers traditionally move the festival to the nearby Pomeranian State Museum or other indoor locations.
Three acts perform on stage each evening: an opening concert with an up-and-coming formation, a main concert with an established star, and usually a concluding major act (e.g., the NDR Bigband). The genre spectrum is wide: Free Jazz, Funk, World Jazz, classic mainstream, New Orleans brass, and experimental formats.
The organizer is the University and Hanseatic City of Greifswald, together with the jazz club art SIEBEN, the Berlin label WhyPlayJazz, and the NDR Bigband. Sponsors include the Ministry for Science, Culture, Federal and European Affairs of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and other partners.
For the 45th edition, the festival presents a dense, cross-generational lineup. Six concerts are spread over two evenings — from experimental sound art to one of Germany's most renowned big bands. The Eldena Monastery Ruins welcome the audience in the evening light.
