Middle Franconian Kirchweih in Altmühlfranken
The Kirchweih Theilenhofen – often called "Kerwa" in dialect – is the most important annual folk festival in the Middle Franconian municipality of Theilenhofen in the Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen district. Like many Kirchweihen in Altmühlfranken, it lasts for a whole week and follows a firmly established choreography.
Culinary-wise, the Theilenhofen Kerwa is a typical Middle Franconian event: Bratwürste (sausages) with sauerkraut, Krenfleisch (cooked pork belly with freshly grated horseradish), suckling pig, homemade snack platters, and a cool Franconian beer. All accompanied by brass music from the region.
As in all Franconian Kirchweihen, a Kirwabaum is erected at the beginning – a tall, decorated maypole trunk that stands as a symbol of the Kirchweih in the village center. Dance evenings, morning pint gatherings (Frühschoppen), and a festive parade complete the days.
The Theilenhofen Kerwa is part of a rich series of Kirchweihen in the Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen district. A few days earlier, Gundelsheim an der Altmühl celebrates its Kerwa, followed by Wachstein and Dornhausen. Larger Kerwas in the region take place in Gunzenhausen, Spalt, and Weißenburg. The Theilenhofen Volksfest also fits into the calendar.
Theilenhofen is located in western Middle Franconia, in the Franconian Lake District area around Brombachsee and Altmühlsee. The municipality belongs to the Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen district and combines village community life with rural tourism.
The 2026 edition follows the traditional program of a week-long Franconian Kirchweih. The exact daily schedule – Kirwabaum raising, brass band performances, festive parade, family afternoon, morning pint gathering (Frühschoppen), church service – will be published by the municipality of Theilenhofen before the Kerwa.
The Theilenhofen Kerwa is part of a dense Kirchweih calendar in the Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen district and the Franconian Lake District.
Updates will be published on theilenhofen.de and in the NN Kirchweih overview for the Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen district.
