Franconian Kerwa Tradition
The Kirchweih – 'Kerwa' in the Franconian dialect – is one of the most important traditional festivals in Altmühlfranken. In Dittenheim, a municipality in the Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen district in the Free State of Bavaria, the Kirchweih is celebrated for several days every October. It commemorates the consecration of the local church and is also a large village festival.
Kerwabaum, Bratwurst, and Beer
The festive image of the Franconian Kirchweih includes the decorated Kerwabaum, the aroma of bratwurst and Krenfleisch, and a cool beer. Music is played, people dance, and celebrations take place in the local inns and festival venues. The Kerwaburschen (young men) and -madli (young women) pass on the tradition from generation to generation.
Tradition in Altmühlfranken
The Kirchweihen shape the autumn in Altmühlfranken: Between April and October, numerous places in the district celebrate their Kerwa. In the districts of the municipality of Dittenheim, further Kirchweihen take place, for example in Sammenheim, Sausenhofen, and Windsfeld. The Dittenheim Kirchweih joins this vibrant parade of Franconian traditions.
Sociability and Community
The Kirchweih is more than a festival: it is living village community. People returning home, relatives, and guests from the surrounding area come together to celebrate. Thus, the Kerwa contributes significantly to the cultural identity of Dittenheim and the Middle Franconia region.
