Traditional Christmas Market at the Foot of the Hohenasperg
When the lights around St. Michael's Church are lit on the first weekend of Advent, one of the most beautiful pre-Christmas seasons in the Ludwigsburg district begins in Asperg. The Asperg Christmas Market traditionally takes place on the festively illuminated square in front of St. Michael's Church – directly below the striking Hohenasperg, the fortress mountain visible from afar that shapes the region. Mayor Christian Eiberger will officially open the market on Saturday at 5 p.m., accompanied musically by the Asperg town band.
The hallmark of the Asperg Christmas Market is Krambambuli – a traditional, high-proof punch specialty served by the Asperg town band at their own stand. Alongside classic mulled wine and children's punch, this fiery drink is an inseparable part of the Asperg Advent experience. Those who try it once come back for it every year. In addition, the stalls offer bratwurst, crêpes, chestnuts, and sweet classics like candied almonds or 'Schmalzgebäck' (traditional pastry).
Stalls selling Christmas crafts, woodwork, candles, embroidery, and Christmas tree decorations line the square. Local clubs, schools, and kindergartens each run their own huts – from sports clubs to the CVJM Asperg (YMCA). The proceeds go directly to the clubs' activities and youth development. This makes the market a true community festival where togetherness is the focus, and commerce takes a backseat to community life.
The Hohenasperg, one of the most famous mountains in Württemberg's Unterland, once a state prison and now a military hospital area, towers over the market. Asperg, located in the Ludwigsburg district in Baden-Württemberg, is one of Württemberg's oldest settlements. The Christmas market uses this historic backdrop to create a contemplative Advent atmosphere that, with its mix of tradition, community life, and cozy size, is far removed from the anonymity of larger markets.
The 46th edition of the Asperg Christmas Market runs on the first Advent weekend of 2026: Saturday, November 28, and Sunday, November 29. As every year, the market takes place on the festively illuminated square in front of St. Michael's Church – directly below the Hohenasperg.
Mayor Christian Eiberger will officially open the event on Saturday at 5 p.m., accompanied musically by the Asperg town band. The band will also once again operate the traditional Krambambuli stand with the famous Asperg punch specialty. Local clubs, schools, and kindergartens will offer arts and crafts, food, and drinks. The proceeds will go to the youth and community work of the town of Asperg.
The detailed hourly program for 2026, including all club stalls and performance times, will be published shortly before the market date on asperg.de.
Free admission. Only food, drinks, and purchases at the stalls are paid for. Proceeds go to the community and youth work of Asperg's clubs.
