About Fischerfest Gaffelrigg

The Fischerfest Gaffelrigg is Vorpommern's largest maritime family festival. Three days of harbor hustle and bustle, traditional sailors, live music on three stages, a funfair with a Ferris wheel, and sporting competitions — all in the historic fishing village of Wieck on the Ryck, with a view of the famous wooden bascule bridge. At the center: around 40 historic sailing ships and modern yachts, which pass through the Wieck bridge in a ship parade on Saturday.

About the Festival

The Fischerfest Gaffelrigg is one of Vorpommern's largest events and the region's biggest maritime family festival. The venue is the historic fishing village of Wieck on the southern bank of the Ryck, shortly before it flows into the Greifswalder Bodden — one of the most beautiful and best-preserved fishing villages in Northern Germany. The organizers are the University and Hanseatic City of Greifswald together with the Museumshafen Greifswald e.V., with NDR 1 Radio MV as media partner.

What to Expect

Three days of harbor activity, three stages with a music program, a funfair with carousels and a 40-meter-high Ferris wheel, food stalls, and street food, arts and crafts, and market stalls. The highlight is the Gaffelrigg on Saturday afternoon: around 40 historic museum and traditional sailing ships as well as modern yachts pass through the Wieck wooden bascule bridge in a ship parade, expertly commented from the shore. In parallel, there are sporting competitions: the ZK10 Cutter Regatta with German teams, the Ryckhangeln World Championship (participants must cross the Ryck over a 30-meter rope), and canoe polo.

Ryck in Flames

On Friday evening around 10:30 PM, "Ryck in Flammen" transforms the night sky over Wieck into a show of pyrotechnics, lasers, and light projections — up to 120 meters high.

History

The Fischerfest has its origins in the harbor and fishing festivals of Wieck. The Gaffelrigg, the ship parade of traditional gaff-rigged sailors, has become the festival's trademark today. In 2025, for the first time, the festival took place without a cultural contribution as part of Greifswald's 775th city anniversary — a birthday gift from the city to its citizens and guests.

Local Context

Wieck, with its wooden bascule bridge (one of the few of its kind in Germany), thatched-roof houses, and museum harbor, is a tourist highlight of Vorpommern. Greifswald, the Hanseatic city on the Bodden, was once part of the Hanseatic League and today stands for university, research, and maritime culture.

Fischerfest Gaffelrigg — edition 2026

The Fischerfest Gaffelrigg 2026 runs from July 17th to 19th in Greifswald-Wieck. Three stages with live music, a funfair with a 40-meter Ferris wheel, "Ryck in Flammen" on Friday evening, the Gaffelrigg ship parade on Saturday, and the Ryckhangeln World Championship. Vorpommern's largest maritime experience weekend.

From July 17th to 19th, 2026, the fishing village of Wieck will once again transform into Vorpommern's largest maritime experience weekend. Around 40 museum and traditional sailing ships will be docked at the harbor, three stages will offer a continuous music program from afternoon into the night, and the funfair will extend across the festival grounds.

The fiery start is on Friday evening at 10:30 PM with "Ryck in Flammen" — a pyrotechnics, laser, and light show with projections up to 120 meters high. On Saturday afternoon, around 40 historic sailing ships and modern yachts will pass through the Wieck wooden bascule bridge in the Gaffelrigg parade. In parallel, the ZK10 Cutter Regatta, Ryckhangeln World Championship, and canoe polo will take place.
