A Moated Castle Becomes an Advent Landscape
In the historic Schlosshof (castle courtyard) on Burgstraße 3 in Walldürn — today the seat of the city administration — the former inner courtyard of the once 12th-century moated castle transforms into the 'Dürmer Schlossweihnacht' from December 4th to 6th, 2026. The market is among the most charming Advent markets in the Neckar-Odenwald district: instead of a large market area in the city center, all activity is concentrated in the enclosed castle courtyard, creating an exceptionally intimate and atmospheric ambiance. The historic 12th-century walls, subtly illuminated, envelop market visitors as if in their own world.
Stalls, Arts and Crafts, Christmas Trees
Around 25 to 30 stalls offer Christmas arts and crafts from regional exhibitors: wood carvings from the Odenwald, felt work, candles, Advent decorations, jewelry, and Christmas tree baubles from their own workshops. A special feature is the traditional Christmas tree sale directly in the castle courtyard — those who like it particularly festive can buy their tree on-site and take it home. For children, a classic carousel spins against the backdrop of the castle.
Culinary Delights
Both sweet and savory options are equally represented in the castle courtyard: Belgian waffles, crêpes, roasted almonds, lard pastries, and gingerbread on the sweet side. Bratwurst, grilled mushrooms, fish, and schnitzel sandwiches on the savory side. Accompanied by traditional Franconian mulled wine (Glühwein), children's punch, and a selection of local wines from nearby Tauberfranken. The city recommends arriving early in the evening — the illumination of the castle courtyard is most atmospheric after dark.
Dürmer Choirs and School Theater
The cultural core is formed by the local choirs, known as 'Dürmer Chöre' — Liederkranz, church choirs, and school choirs from Walldürn schools, who take turns performing Christmas carols. The city's schools contribute their own plays, small Advent performances for the whole family. Local music associations bring brass ensembles; the program changes from hour to hour. On Sunday, St. Nicholas himself appears and traditionally distributes the 'Stocking Action' — small stockings filled with sweets for the children.
Walldürn — Pilgrimage Town in the Odenwald
Walldürn, with just under 11,500 inhabitants, is one of the most significant pilgrimage sites in Southern Germany. The Basilica of the Holy Blood attracts tens of thousands of pilgrims annually. The former Electoral Mainz castle, where the Schlossweihnacht takes place, was the seat of official administration for centuries and today houses the mayor's office and the citizens' office. The combination of religious tradition, historical substance, and small-town charm makes Walldürn an atmospheric destination during Advent.
