About Brahms Festival

The Brahms Festival Meiningen-Altenstein honours the close connection between Johannes Brahms and Meiningen, today's "theatre city" of Southern Thuringia. Brahms repeatedly travelled to the small residential town from 1881 onwards at the invitation of conductor Hans von Bülow. With the support of Duke Georg II and his wife Helene Freiin von Heldburg, he found unique conditions for his artistic work — Meiningen erected Germany's first Brahms monument in 1899. His Fourth Symphony premiered here in 1885. The 2026 festival runs from May 20 to 25, 2026, and will be held at several historic venues: Meiningen State Theatre, Elisabethenburg Palace, Altenstein Palace, Palais Weimar in Bad Liebenstein, and Meiningen City Church. The programme features symphony concerts, chamber music, piano recitals, readings, and guided tours of Brahms sites.

Meiningen — Theatre City and Brahms Site

Meiningen is located on the Werra river in the Schmalkalden-Meiningen district, in the south of Thuringia. With around 21,000 inhabitants, the town is manageable but culturally exceptional: it was the residential city of the Duchy of Saxe-Meiningen (1680–1918) and, under Duke Georg II, shaped European theatre history with the "Meininger Hoftheater" reforms. Today, it houses the renowned Meiningen State Theatre with its own Court Orchestra. Elisabethenburg Palace, the former residence, is now home to the Meiningen Museums with rich Brahms, Bach, and Reger collections.

Brahms in Meiningen — A Creative Relationship

Johannes Brahms first came to Meiningen in 1881, invited by Hans von Bülow, who had shaped the Meiningen Court Orchestra into one of Europe's best orchestras. Brahms found ideal conditions for his work here — Duke Georg II and Duchess Helene offered him friendship, and the orchestra dedicated itself to his music. Brahms himself conducted the premiere of his Fourth Symphony in Meiningen on October 25, 1885. He returned several times, often accompanied by Clara Schumann. When news of his death arrived in 1897, Meiningen was the first German city to dedicate a monument to him — inaugurated in 1899 in the Englischer Garten, now the Palace Park. Altenstein Palace near Bad Liebenstein, the summer residence of the Meiningen Dukes, was also a place where Brahms stayed: here he composed his last chamber music works.

The 2026 Festival — Symphonic, Chamber Music, Songs

The 2026 Brahms Festival spans six days, covering Brahms's works and the Brahms geography of the region. It opens on May 20 with Brahms's Second Piano Concerto and works by Robert Schumann, performed by the Meiningen Court Orchestra under Gabriel Venzago. A song and piano recital centred around Brahms and Clara Schumann (May 21), chamber concerts with string instruments (May 24), and a clarinet sonata programme to conclude the festival (May 25) will follow. On May 22, the Brahms Monument Commemoration Ceremony will take place at the original monument. Guided hikes along the Brahms Hiking Trail and through the park of Altenstein Palace near Bad Liebenstein (Wartburgkreis district) combine music with the landscape where Brahms composed.

Schmalkalden-Meiningen and Wartburgkreis

The Brahms Festival is spread across two districts: Schmalkalden-Meiningen, with its main town Meiningen (State Theatre, Elisabethenburg Palace, City Church), and Wartburgkreis, with Bad Liebenstein (Altenstein Palace, Palais Weimar). The connection between these two locations via the Brahms Hiking Trail in the Thuringian Forest is a tourist highlight: Brahms himself hiked between the places and was inspired by the landscape. The festival is part of a broader Central German festival landscape and is among the most important Brahms events in Germany.

Brahms Festival — edition 2026

The 2026 Brahms Festival Meiningen-Altenstein runs from May 20 to 25, 2026, featuring six days of Brahms music in Meiningen and Bad Liebenstein. The opening features Brahms's Second Piano Concerto and Schumann works by the Meiningen Court Orchestra under Gabriel Venzago. A song and piano recital on Brahms/Clara Schumann (May 21), the Brahms Monument Commemoration Ceremony (May 22), chamber music (May 24), and clarinet sonatas to conclude the festival (May 25). Guided hikes along the Brahms Hiking Trail are also included.

Brahms Festival 2026 — Six Days of Brahms's Footprints

The 2026 programme combines symphonic music with chamber music, songs, and piano recitals — all genres in which Brahms was particularly prolific during his time in Meiningen. The Meiningen Court Orchestra, conducted by Gabriel Venzago, will open the festival, while international soloists will present chamber and solo recitals. The Brahms Monument Commemoration Ceremony on May 22 is a central historical highlight — held at Germany's oldest Brahms monument, erected in 1899 in the palace park.
