Anniversary year for the Theatre Duke, whose reforms revolutionized European theatre
Duke Georg II of Saxe-Meiningen (1826–1914) ruled the small Saxon duchy for 48 years. More important than his political significance is his theatrical legacy: with the "Meiningers" — his reformed court theatre ensemble — he toured Europe and revolutionized acting. Authentic historical costumes instead of theatrical kitsch, naturalistic crowd scenes, precise direction of actors, a new conception of the stage as a historical space — these innovations influenced Stanislavski, Reinhardt, and later Hollywood historical films. Modern theatre direction would be unthinkable without the Meiningen theatre reform.
The anniversary year kicks off with the Grand Anniversary Festival on Wednesday, April 2, 2026 — exactly on the Duke's 200th birthday — at Elisabethenburg Palace, the ancestral residence of the Dukes of Meiningen. The palace will be open from 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM under the motto "Open Palace" with free admission. Highlights: Opening of the special exhibition "Georg II. von Sachsen-Meiningen: A Princely Creator" at 5:00 PM, a concert on a restored Bechstein grand piano from 1881 (the Duke's household instrument), an interactive AR palace tour "Georg II in AR" at 7:00 PM, and the conclusion of the Duke Georg relay run in the palace courtyard.
The entire 2025/26 season of the Staatstheater Meiningen is dedicated to Georg II. Productions from his favourite repertoire — Shakespeare, Schiller, Kleist — will be staged with particular attention to his theatre reforms. The Staatstheater Meiningen is now one of Thuringia's most important city theatres and continues to preserve the legacy of the Theatre Duke in its buildings and traditions.
The Georgjahr connects three locations: Meiningen (the residence city), Bad Liebenstein (with Marienthaler Schlösschen, one of the Duke's favourite places), and Heldburg (Veste Heldburg, the "Franconian Lighthouse," which Georg II had restored). A programme connects the three venues — a region of the Werra Valley, which today belongs to the districts of Schmalkalden-Meiningen and Hildburghausen.
The anniversary year combines historical commemoration with contemporary theatre production. The city of Meiningen, the Staatstheater, Elisabethenburg Palace, Veste Heldburg, and Marienthaler Schlösschen Bad Liebenstein form a network of venues.
