Tips
The opening hike on Saturday morning is worthwhile – meeting point and time will be announced on the Kirkel-Altstadt Facebook page. If you want to experience both of Kirkel's top events: Medieval market at Kirkel Castle in May, village festival in June.
A Weekend for the Clubs
Kirkel-Altstadt is one of the three districts of the municipality of Kirkel in the Saarpfalz district (alongside Kirkel-Neuhäusel and Limbach). The village festival here is jointly supported by SV Altstadt 1920 (sports club) and TV Altstadt (gymnastics club), coordinated by the local council. Both clubs provide helpers for the numerous stands – from the beer garden and barbecue station to the cake stand on Sunday.
Hike as an Opening
A unique feature of the festival is the opening hike through the forests of the Kirkel municipality. Those who participate are rewarded with the tapping of the festival keg on the village square. The hike leads through the foothills of the Pfälzerwald around Kirkel Castle – a scenic highlight, as the municipality is located in the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Bliesgau.
Program on Burgstraße
The actual festival takes place on Burgstraße. Several club stands offer bratwurst, currywurst, fries, steaks, wine and sparkling wine (gymnastics club), beer (sports club), and cake on Sunday afternoon. A bouncy castle provides entertainment for children; on Sunday, the line dancers serve Schwenker (grilled meat skewers) and potato salad. Live music – mostly regional cover bands – plays on Saturday evening.
Family-Friendly and Down-to-Earth
The Dorffest Altstadt is a classic Saarpfalz format: no admission fee, fair prices, personal atmosphere. Families find plenty of activities, older residents their regular spot at the beer tables, and younger people meet in the evening for live music. It is one of the festivals that fulfills exactly the function for which village festivals in Saarland are intended: fostering community.
Kirkel and its Three Districts
The municipality of Kirkel, with around 10,000 inhabitants, is one of the medium-sized municipalities in the Saarpfalz district, known primarily for its medieval castle, the Burgsommer festival, and its location in the Bliesgau Biosphere Reserve. While Kirkel-Neuhäusel is considered the main town, Altstadt particularly preserves its village character. The village festival is the annual expression of this identity.
