An Advent Market with Tradition under the Bismarck Tower
The Aumühle Christmas Market is one of the oldest Advent traditions in the district of Herzogtum Lauenburg. Over forty years after its founding, it is still supported by the non-profit association KuBA e.V. (Culture and Education in Aumühle) and reliably takes place on the first weekend of Advent around the historic Bismarck Tower – that viewing tower from 1903, which is considered a landmark of the municipality of Aumühle in the middle of Sachsenwald.
What awaits you
In the manageable market area, you will find stalls of local artisans, volunteers from associations such as the Lions Club and the volunteer fire department, as well as a curated selection of handmade jewelry, turned wooden crafts, and Christmas decorations. The culinary offerings are dominated by a hearty North German character: bratwurst and schnitzel from local providers, crêpes, fresh apple fritters, mulled wine, and hot apple punch. The homemade Advent pan from the KuBA team is considered a culinary highlight of the market among regular guests.
Program and Live Music
The Sachsenwald Sound Orchestra provides atmospheric live music under the tower, while Santa Claus mingles with the younger visitors on both days. Dance performances by Aumühle children, a multi-award-winning tombola, and a lovingly supervised model railway complete the family offerings. A children's railway runs around the grounds – a highlight for the youngest guests.
Character and Atmosphere
Those looking for large, commercial Christmas markets like the Hamburg Rathausmarkt will be disappointed here. Aumühle consciously opts for the exact opposite: a market on a manageable scale, supported by local volunteers, with personal encounters in the foreground. This small-but-fine mentality makes the Aumühle Christmas Market a popular destination for families from eastern Hamburg, Sachsenwald, and the entire district of Herzogtum Lauenburg in Schleswig-Holstein.
Location and Sachsenwald
Aumühle is located on the eastern edge of Hamburg's commuter belt, nestled in Sachsenwald, the former gift of Kaiser Wilhelm to Otto von Bismarck. The Bismarck Tower can be reached on foot in a few minutes from Aumühle train station via the Rastenburg-Pfad. Admission to the market is free.
