Spiritual festival on the medieval monastery grounds of Lindow — spiritual impulses, history, and encounters
Lindow Monastery was founded in the 13th century as a Cistercian nunnery and is one of the most important medieval monastery complexes in the state of Brandenburg. With its monastery church, cloistered area, and surrounding farm buildings, it offers a historically rich space for a spiritual pilgrimage festival. Lindow (Mark) — a small town with around 1,500 inhabitants, characterized by three lakes (Vielitzsee, Großer Lindowsee, Kleiner Wutzsee) — is located in the Ostprignitz-Ruppin district in northwestern Brandenburg.
The Pilgrimage Festival runs on May 9, 2026, from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM. It is designed as a spiritual day — not a tourist event, but a day of pilgrimage and encounter that combines the medieval tradition of the monastery with contemporary spirituality. Spiritual impulses, historical stations, musical contributions, and pilgrimage stations shape the program.
The Lindow Church Choir will provide the musical accompaniment for the day with choral music from various eras. In addition, cultural impulses are planned — readings, lectures on the monastery's history, guided discussions. The pilgrimage stations along the monastery grounds invite mindful reflection and spiritual experience of the place.
The organizer is the Evangelical United Parish of Herzberg-Lindow in the Upper Havelland Church District. The combination of several rural church parishes into a united parish is typical in today's Evangelical state church — it enables the preservation of historical sacred sites beyond individual parishes.
Lindow belongs to the Ostprignitz-Ruppin district and is located in the Ruppiner Schweiz (Ruppin Switzerland) — an ice-age formed hilly landscape with forests and lakes. Theodor Fontane frequently described this region in his "Wanderings through the Mark Brandenburg" and dedicated its climate of "melancholy peace." The Pilgrimage Festival fits into this contemplative, nature-oriented atmosphere.
The 2026 edition connects the medieval monastery history with lived contemporary spirituality. Spiritual impulses, readings, choir contributions, and pilgrimage stations create a day over the six hours of programming that is consciously not a tourist format — but a festival of pilgrimage and encounter.
The Lindow Church Choir will provide the musical accompaniment with choral music from various eras. Cultural impulses and lectures on the monastery's history complement the spiritual program.
