Over 80 nurseries, tree nurseries, and seed companies in the Berlin Botanical Garden
The Berlin Perennial Market has been the capital's most important plant market for decades – and one of the most significant in Germany. Twice a year (spring and late summer/autumn), Gärtnerhof GmbH brings together the best of German plant cultivation: perennial nurseries, tree nurseries, seed companies, specialists for rare shrubs, wild perennials, Mediterranean plants, berry fruits, and old apple varieties. Anyone interested in gardens and plants plans this weekend well in advance.
The autumn edition takes place every year in the Botanical Garden Berlin-Dahlem – one of the largest and most diverse botanical gardens in Europe. Around 22,000 plant species grow on 43 hectares; the Great Tropical House, built in 1907, is one of the tallest free-standing greenhouses in the world. The market extends along the paths around the Italian Garden and the entrance area on Königin-Luise-Straße. The combination of market and garden is part of the concept: the garden's day ticket is included in the market admission.
The product range for the autumn edition is geared towards the planting season from September to November. Perennials in all variations – peonies, hostas, asters, grasses, wild perennials for natural gardens. Shrubs for autumn planting, from fruit trees to magnolias and rare bushes. Flower bulbs in a large selection – tulips, daffodils, crocuses, snowdrops, but also more unusual species. In addition, books, tools, pottery, seeds, and advice from the gardeners themselves.
What makes the Perennial Market unmistakable: Often, the owners of the nurseries themselves are at the stands – plant experts with decades of experience. The advice is therefore on a level you won't find in a garden center. If you come with a specific question ("What grows in my shady bed?", "Which apple variety for the Berlin climate zone?"), you'll get honest, well-founded answers.
The autumn edition is the second and, in many aspects, the most diverse edition of the Berlin Perennial Market. Unlike in spring, the focus here is on plants that are put into the ground from September to November – flower bulbs for spring, perennials for winter preparation, and shrubs for autumn planting.
Over 80 nurseries and tree nurseries from Germany, Holland, Belgium, and sometimes other neighboring countries exhibit. The advice at the stands is on a level that garden centers cannot offer – often the owners themselves are at the stand.
S-Bahn S1 to Botanischer Garten or U-Bahn U3 to Dahlem-Dorf, each about a 10-minute walk. Bus lines X11, 101, 285 stop directly at the Königin-Luise-Straße entrance. Parking is very limited – public transport is strongly recommended.
€10 (€7 reduced for students, severely disabled). Day ticket to the Botanical Garden included.
Arrive very early – the market opening at 9 am is usually very busy, and many specialties are already sold out by Sunday afternoon. If you buy large plants, bring a cart or carrying handles; handcarts are allowed on the paths. A visit to the Tropical House immediately afterwards is worthwhile.
