About Stadt- und Hütesfest Meiningen

The Stadt- und Hütesfest is Meiningen's largest Volksfest (popular festival) and traditionally marks the start of summer in the South Thuringian district town. In 2026, the festival coincides with the themed year “200 Years of Duke Georg II.” — the city celebrates the birthday of the famous theatre duke Georg II. of Saxe-Meiningen (1826–1914), who revolutionized German theatre history with his “Meininger Hofbühne”. The parade on Sunday is dedicated to the anniversary. Further highlights include the legendary duck race on the Werra river, the communal Hütes-Essen (named after the regional dumplings, the “Hüten”), live performances on the market stage, and the parallel Pottery Market Festival. Three days of Volksfest in the city center, free admission.

200 Years of Duke Georg II. — The Anniversary Year

In 2026, Meiningen celebrates an extraordinary city anniversary: the theatre duke Georg II. of Saxe-Meiningen would have turned 200 years old in 2026. Georg II. (1826–1914) made Meiningen the theatre capital of Europe with his “Meininger Hofbühne” from 1866 onwards — the “Meiningen Principles” (historically accurate costumes and stage sets, ensemble playing instead of star theatre, directorial theatre) shaped theatre history worldwide. The 2026 Stadt- und Hütesfest uses this occasion for a grand themed parade on the festival Sunday — clubs, schools, and theatre groups will march through the city center in historical costumes.

Hütes-Essen — The Regional Dumpling Tradition

The second part of the name — “Hütes” — refers to a South Thuringian specialty: the “Hüte” are a regional variety of dumplings, traditionally made from raw and cooked potatoes, and are eaten in Meiningen on Sunday lunchtime as part of a communal Hütes-Essen at long tables in the city center. The city organizes the communal meal, and local restaurateurs and clubs prepare the dumplings. This communal meal makes the Hütesfest more than just a routine Volksfest — it is an expression of South Thuringian identity.

Werra River Fun and Duck Race

Another classic of the city festival is the duck race on the Werra — the river that flows through Meiningen. Hundreds of yellow-red plastic ducks are thrown into the Werra and float downstream; the winners are determined at a finish line. The proceeds from the duck purchases go to charitable causes. The duck race is accompanied by “Werra River Fun” — interactive water activities, boat trips, and a beach festival on the banks of the Werra.

Live Stage and Pottery Market Festival

On the market stage, regional bands and musicians perform live all day long — rock, pop, Schlager, and Thuringian folk music alternate. In parallel, the Pottery Market Festival takes place on the market square — a pottery market with craft stalls, underscoring the connection of the Hütesfest with the South Thuringian ceramic tradition (Bürgel, Römhild). Thus, the festival combines a Volksfest atmosphere, regional culinary culture, a craft market, and a cultural-historical anniversary.

Meiningen — The Theatre Town in the Werra Valley

Meiningen is the district town of Schmalkalden-Meiningen in southern Thuringia, with around 24,000 inhabitants. The town in the Werra Valley is primarily known for its historic Court Theatre (today Meininger Staatstheater), the main church, and Elisabethenburg Palace. The Stadt- und Hütesfest, alongside the Theatre Autumn and the Advent season, is the third highlight of Meiningen's festival year — and an important festival of civic identity.
