Arts and Crafts Market "Between the Gates" on Ascension Day in the historic old town of Nideggen
The HandFest Nideggen combines two things that don't often go well together: real craftsmanship and a medieval small-town backdrop. Organized by the Nideggen Business Association (GGN), an alliance of local retailers, artisans, and restaurateurs, the market takes place annually on Ascension Day (Christi Himmelfahrt) – right in the heart of the historic old town, the area "Between the Gates" between Düren Gate and Cologne Gate.
In 2026, Ascension Day falls on Thursday, May 14th – and thus the HandFest event as well. Opening hours are in line with tradition from previous years: typically from 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Admission is free.
The motto "Between the Gates" refers to the geographical reality of the market: Nideggen is one of the few surviving walled towns in the Eifel region. Düren Gate and Cologne Gate still mark the medieval city limits today, and between them lies the old town with Burgstraße, Marktplatz, and Rathausgasse. This is exactly where the stalls find their place – amidst half-timbered houses, the parish church of St. Johannes Baptist, and the sightline to Nideggen Castle.
The HandFest is no ordinary market. The GGN focuses particularly on artisans who demonstrate their techniques on-site:
The live format distinguishes the market from commercial hobby fairs – here you see how a piece is made.
Nideggen Castle, once one of the most powerful castles in the Rhineland and now a museum (Eifel Museum Nideggen), towers above the town. It is just a few minutes' walk from the market. Those who combine the HandFest with a castle visit and a hike in the North Eifel Nature Park will have a perfect Ascension Day outing. The nearby Rursee reservoir also offers boat trips and swimming opportunities.
Nideggen is located in the Düren district in North Rhine-Westphalia, about 50 km southwest of Cologne and 30 km south of Aachen. The town, with around 9,500 inhabitants, is the gateway to the Eifel and the Eifel National Park. The old town with its gates, the castle, and the half-timbered houses is considered one of the most beautiful preserved town ensembles in the region. The GGN organizes several markets and festivals throughout the year – the HandFest is one of them, alongside the Christmas market and smaller seasonal markets.
The 2026 edition sticks to the proven motto "Between the Gates". Organized by the GGN, regional artisans present their techniques live in the historic old town. The combination of a medieval setting, live demonstrations, and the Ascension Day date creates a particularly relaxed, family-friendly atmosphere. Free admission.
