Street theatre, acrobatics and variety show on the Whitsun weekend
The International Street Art Festival Heringsdorf is one of the most renowned street art events in Northeast Germany. For four days around Whitsun, the famous Heringsdorf promenade—offering a unique backdrop with its spa architecture and views of Germany's longest pier—transforms into a multinational stage for street artists.
Over 15 countries send their representatives to Usedom annually: magicians, jugglers, acrobats, stand-up comedians, mimes, and street theatre troupes. The organizers select the programme items from numerous applications, ensuring a distinct programme each year featuring both established acts and newcomers. The format is family-friendly and deliberately accessible.
The artistic highlight is the gala show "Varieté am Meer" on Saturday evening in the Kaiserbädersaal. A renowned master of ceremonies hosts the programme, where the selected festival stars present their highlight acts — acrobatics, witty comedy, juggling, and magic in a high-quality one-evening production. Tickets for the gala are sold separately.
During the day, artists perform on the Heringsdorf promenade in open-air performances — admission is free. The main evening programmes take place at the concert square. Sunday is crowned by an anniversary concert and fire show on the beach at 10:00 PM — pyrotechnics, light effects, and musical accompaniment make the evening a collective festival experience. The festival concludes with the awards ceremony on Whit Monday.
Accompanying the festival is a Festival Market with a hands-on circus, craft stations for children, and street food stalls, inviting visitors to linger. Families can enjoy the performances for free during the day and book individual programme items in the evening. This mix of free street performances and paid gala shows makes the festival attractive to various budgets and interests.
The imperial resort of Heringsdorf, along with Ahlbeck and Bansin, is one of Usedom's three imperial resorts in the Vorpommern-Greifswald district. The street art festival is part of the municipality's strategic cultural policy to expand the traditional resort image with contemporary cultural formats. It complements recurring annual highlights such as the Usedom Music Festival and the UseTube Newcomer Festival.
On Whit Friday at 7:00 PM, the concert shell on the promenade opens the festival with an official opening show. Afterwards, street artists will perform on the promenade until 11:00 PM in open performances.
On Whit Saturday at 8:00 PM, the central festival gala 'Varieté am Meer' will take place in the Kaiserbädersaal. A master of ceremonies will guide the audience through a programme of acrobatics, comedy, juggling, and magic — the highlight acts of the festival artists.
On Whit Sunday at 10:00 PM, the beach transforms into a pyrotechnic backdrop with the anniversary concert and fire show. Music, dance, and flame artistry combine to create an atmospheric Sunday evening.
On Whit Monday, the awards ceremony concludes the festival. A jury will select the best performances in various categories.
