25th Season of a Bergisches Land Summer Classic
Talflimmern Summer Cinema has been a fixture of the Wuppertal summer since 2002 — one of the few open-air cinemas in the Bergisches Land region with continuous operation and a curated program. Since the beginning, the location has been the courtyard of the Alte Feuerwache at Gathe 20 in the Elberfeld district — an atmospheric venue, enclosed by the historic architecture of the former fire station and the adjacent Nordstadt buildings. The 25th season in 2026 runs from July 17 to August 30 — six weeks of film programming on alternating evenings.
Summer Cinema with a Curated Film Selection
The program includes current feature films, indie productions, classics, and special programs — not exclusively blockbuster screenings, but a curated mix that caters to the interests of the Bergisches Land film fan community. The highlight of each season is the silent film night with live music — a tradition that distinguishes Talflimmern from many commercial open-air cinemas and builds on close cooperation with the Tonhalle Orchestra and freelance Wuppertal musicians. Occasionally, films are supplemented by dance and theater performances — a programmatic connection to Wuppertal's dance and Pina Bausch tradition.
Successful Year 2025 — and an NRW Award
The 2025 season was particularly successful for Talflimmern: around 3,500 visitors represent a 20 percent increase compared to the previous year and the best result since 2019. The most attended film of the season was the Argentine-British comedy "My Life as a Penguin", which not only sold out its premiere screening but also an additional showing. In November 2025, the Film and Media Foundation NRW honored Talflimmern's commitment with an award of 2,000 euros, which will be invested in modernization before the 2026 season — better projection technology, new seating, an improved tarpaulin system for rainy weather.
2026 Program — To Be Published Mid-June
The exact film program for the 25th season will be published in mid-June 2026 at talflimmern.de/programm. The organizers curate the program in the months leading up to the season from the current cinema offerings, classic films, and special features — taking into account wishes and recommendations from the Wuppertal community.
Rain-Ready Thanks to Tarpaulin System
A technical feature that distinguishes Talflimmern from many commercial open-airs: a tarpaulin system can be deployed in case of rain, protecting spectators and the projection area. Tickets remain valid — screenings are usually held even in moderate weather. In extreme weather conditions, the screening will be postponed or tickets refunded.
Wuppertal-Elberfeld as a Backdrop
The Alte Feuerwache is located in the Elberfeld district in Wuppertal's Nordstadt — one of the city's most vibrant neighborhoods with an alternative cultural scene, students, creatives, and a distinct café and pub culture. The Schwebebahn (suspension railway), Wuppertal's landmark, is just a few minutes away — and after the film, you can round off the evening in one of Nordstadt's many establishments. The atmosphere is urban-alternative, with a mixed audience of students and culturally interested Wuppertal residents of all generations.
