About Spring Reception Botanical Garden

On Sunday, May 3, 2026, the Friends of the Wuppertal Botanical Garden invite you to the traditional Spring Reception with Flower and Garden Market — the festive season opening of the Botanical Garden on the Hardt. From 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., the garden area around Elisenplatz and the greenhouses will transform into a lively plant and garden market: regional exhibitors will present perennials, balcony plants, herbs, seeds, garden literature, and garden accessories. In parallel, the association will open a book market, organize culinary stands, invite you to climb the Elisenturm, and conduct garden tours. Admission is free. For years, the reception has been a central meeting point for Wuppertal and Bergisch garden lovers to kick off May.

Spring Reception Botanical Garden Wuppertal — Season Opening with Tradition

When the Wuppertal Hardt begins to bloom in May, the Friends of the Wuppertal Botanical Garden e.V. invite you to the traditional Spring Reception — an opening of the plant season that is also a market, cultural event, and social gathering. In 2026, the reception falls on Sunday, May 3rd, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Admission is free.

Flower and Garden Market — Regional Exhibitors in the Botanical Garden

The heart of the reception is the Flower and Garden Market around the Elisenplatz and the greenhouse area. Regional exhibitors — nurseries, perennial specialists, herb manufacturers, seed providers — present a range that cannot be found in a classic garden center:

  • Perennials — shade perennials, sun-lovers, rare varieties
  • Balcony plants for Wuppertal's terraced house gardens
  • Herbs and medicinal plants in organic quality
  • Seeds — wildflowers, vegetables, forgotten varieties
  • Garden accessories — pottery, birdhouses, plant labels, trowels
  • Garden literature and seed calendars

Book Market, Culinary Delights, and Elisenturm

Beyond the pure garden market, the Spring Reception offers an enriched program:

  • Book market by the Friends association with garden books, botany literature, coffee table books
  • Culinary stands with rolls, cakes, coffee, regional snacks
  • Elisenturm climb — the historic water tower of the grounds opens for climbing with a view of the Wuppertal valley
  • Guided tours through the themed areas: Alpine Garden, Medicinal Plant Garden, Greenhouses with succulents and tropical plants
  • Meet the volunteers of the Friends association

Friends Association as Sponsor — Civic Engagement

The Friends of the Wuppertal Botanical Garden e.V. has been the most important civic partner of the garden for decades. Beyond the reception, the association organizes tours, planting days, plant exchanges, lectures — and finances specific investments (tools, special assortments, restorations) through donations and contributions. The Spring Reception is both a fundraising event and a membership acquisition event.

Wuppertal Botanical Garden — on the Hardt

The Wuppertal Botanical Garden is located on the Hardt, Wuppertal's oldest and highest historical park, above the city center. On about 2.5 hectares, it cultivates 4,000 plant species in themed areas — Alpine Garden, Medicinal Plant Garden, Cottage Garden, Rhododendron Grove, Greenhouses with succulents and tropical plants. The historic Elisenturm (built in 1838), the Elisenhöhe with its panoramic view, and the Villa Eller are the architectural anchor points. The entire area is the Hardtanlage, a 19th-century landscape park.

Wuppertal — the Suspension Railway City

The independent city of Wuppertal, with its approximately 360,000 inhabitants, is located in the Bergisches Land region in the narrow Wupper Valley. World-famous for its suspension railway (since 1901), the Friedrich Engels Memorial (Engels was born here), the Von der Heydt Museum, the Skulpturenpark Waldfrieden by Tony Cragg, and the Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch. Wuppertal is a city of cultures and topography — on the Hardt, you find the quiet, contemplative side between the industrial and Pina Bausch dance worlds.
