Season opening of the Botanical Garden — Perennials, balcony plants, book market, and Elisenturm climb
When the Wuppertal Hardt begins to bloom in May, the Friends of the Wuppertal Botanical Garden e.V. invite you to the traditional Spring Reception — an opening of the plant season that is also a market, cultural event, and social gathering. In 2026, the reception falls on Sunday, May 3rd, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Admission is free.
The heart of the reception is the Flower and Garden Market around the Elisenplatz and the greenhouse area. Regional exhibitors — nurseries, perennial specialists, herb manufacturers, seed providers — present a range that cannot be found in a classic garden center:
Beyond the pure garden market, the Spring Reception offers an enriched program:
The Friends of the Wuppertal Botanical Garden e.V. has been the most important civic partner of the garden for decades. Beyond the reception, the association organizes tours, planting days, plant exchanges, lectures — and finances specific investments (tools, special assortments, restorations) through donations and contributions. The Spring Reception is both a fundraising event and a membership acquisition event.
The Wuppertal Botanical Garden is located on the Hardt, Wuppertal's oldest and highest historical park, above the city center. On about 2.5 hectares, it cultivates 4,000 plant species in themed areas — Alpine Garden, Medicinal Plant Garden, Cottage Garden, Rhododendron Grove, Greenhouses with succulents and tropical plants. The historic Elisenturm (built in 1838), the Elisenhöhe with its panoramic view, and the Villa Eller are the architectural anchor points. The entire area is the Hardtanlage, a 19th-century landscape park.
The independent city of Wuppertal, with its approximately 360,000 inhabitants, is located in the Bergisches Land region in the narrow Wupper Valley. World-famous for its suspension railway (since 1901), the Friedrich Engels Memorial (Engels was born here), the Von der Heydt Museum, the Skulpturenpark Waldfrieden by Tony Cragg, and the Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch. Wuppertal is a city of cultures and topography — on the Hardt, you find the quiet, contemplative side between the industrial and Pina Bausch dance worlds.
The season opening of the Wuppertal Botanical Garden: regional nurseries and plant specialists selling perennials, herbs, and balcony flowers, the Friends association opens a book market, the Elisenturm is open for climbing, and guided tours explore the themed areas of the grounds. Free admission, a family event for the Bergisches Land region.

Sunday, May 3, 2026 — 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Possible postponement in case of extreme weather, update on the association's website.
Those who want to plant seriously should come between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. — the selection will still be complete then; good perennials often sell out by the afternoon. Climbing the Elisenturm is worthwhile in clear weather — a panorama extending to the Ruhr area.
