Action day of owner-managed shops in Wuppertal's Mirker Viertel
In the Mirker Viertel of Wuppertal's Nordstadt, the annual Mirker Maibummel takes place on Saturday, May 9, 2026 — an action day celebrating the quarter's owner-managed shops. From 12 PM to 6 PM, ten creative shops and studios along Neue Nordstraße and Helmholtzstraße open their doors with extended offerings, presentations, and mini-workshops. In front of each participating shop stands a Maibaum (Maypole) as a visible identifying feature — a charming gesture that also serves as a guide.
As with the Mirker Winterbummel, which preceded the Maibummel, the collection pass concept is back in May: Visitors receive a stamp at each shop. Those who collect a certain number of stamps and submit the completed card at one of the participating shops will be entered into a raffle. This playful element turns a shopping stroll into a mini-neighborhood rally, consistently guiding visitors through all participating stores — even those they might otherwise overlook.
The Mirker Viertel is one of the most vibrant neighborhoods in Wuppertal's Nordstadt — characterized by an unusually high density of owner-managed shops, studios, workshops, bars, and social initiatives. The participating shops at the Maibummel cover a broad spectrum: fashion boutiques, galleries, bookstores, cafes, goldsmith workshops, small publishers, concept stores. The exact list of the ten shops will be announced before the action day via the Maibummel's Linktree.
The Maibäume in front of the shops are not just signposts — they give the action day a distinct spring touch. The neighborhood is decorated with plants, flowers, and small decorations. This addition visually underscores the neighborly atmosphere of the Mirker Viertel and contrasts with the winter version (Mirker Winterbummel).
After completing the stroll, visitors can head to the Weinerei from 6 PM onwards — the central meeting point for socializing after the official program. It's an opportunity to share the day's experiences, meet shop owners again, and savor the neighborhood spirit.
The organizer is Quartier:Mirke, a civic initiative for urban development in the Mirker Viertel. Quartier:Mirke has been organizing neighborhood festivals for years, promoting participatory projects through a neighborhood fund, and working towards a livable Nordstadt. The cooperation partner is the initiative Aufbruch am Arrenberg, a similar initiative from the adjacent western district of Arrenberg. Both initiatives have made Wuppertal a national model for neighborhood-based urban development.
The Maibummel 2026 continues the successful concept of the Mirker Bummel: an action day where ten owner-managed shops in the Mirker Viertel open their doors with extended offerings. Maypoles in front of each shop, collection passes for a raffle, and a social gathering at the Weinerei from 6 PM. Organizer: Quartier:Mirke in cooperation with Aufbruch am Arrenberg.
