About BMF Wuppertal

For four days, the Historische Stadthalle Wuppertal transforms into the global center of Barbershop singing. Over 400 singers from Germany and around the world compete in quartets and mixed choirs. Highlights include the German Quartet and Chorus Championships, and for the first time in 2026, the World Mixed Championships in Wuppertal. The Barbershop Music Festival (BMF) is not just a competition, but a packed weekend of concerts, workshops, and the relaxed festival atmosphere of the international Barbershop scene, under the motto 'A CAPPELLA LOVE'.

What is Barbershop?

Barbershop is an a cappella singing tradition that originated in the USA in the early 20th century: mostly four-part harmony, close harmony (with characteristic 'ringing chords'), often staged humorously, and always without instruments. What began as a small, almost amateur tradition in American barbershops has become a global movement today, with its own high culture, championships, and a growing fan base in Europe. In Germany, BinG! – Barbershop in Germany e.V. organizes the scene and hosts the Barbershop Music Festival in Wuppertal every year.

The Historische Stadthalle as a Stage

The Historische Stadthalle Wuppertal on Johannisberg is one of the acoustically best concert halls in Western Germany – a late historicist building from 1900 with the famous Großer Saal (Great Hall), which sound engineer Andreas Spreer has repeatedly called 'one of the best halls in Europe'. This acoustics are ideal for Barbershop singing, which relies on the resonance and brilliance of overtones. In festival mode, the building is fully utilized by BMF for four days – Großer Saal, Mendelssohn-Saal, Foyer, and halls on the ground floor.

Competition Dramaturgy

The festival is tightly structured as a competition. Friday: Semifinals of the German Quartet Championships and the World Mixed Quartets, followed by the 'Show of the Stars' in the evening – a gala with the most internationally renowned Barbershop stars. Saturday: During the day, the German Barbershop Chorus Championships and the World Mixed Championships take place. Sunday: the grand 'Show of Champions' with the newly crowned champions – over 900 singers from all over the world sing together.

World Mixed Championships in Wuppertal

The 2026 edition brings a special feature: the World Mixed Championships will be held in Wuppertal. Mixed quartets (male and female voices combined) and mixed choirs from all over the world – USA, Scandinavia, Great Britain, Netherlands, Australia – will gather for the World Championship. This makes the 2026 edition the most important international BMF event in recent years.

Workshops and Community

Alongside the competition, there are workshops for choirs, quartet coaching sessions, show training, and so-called 'Tag-Singing Sessions' – informal gatherings where singers meet in the foyer without registration and spontaneously start singing Barbershop songs together. This relaxed, sing-along atmosphere makes the BMF more important to many singers than the actual competition.

Wuppertal on a Spring Weekend

Wuppertal in March is a world of its own: the Schwebebahn (suspended monorail) over the Wupper river, the Tanztheater Pina Bausch (Pina Bausch Dance Theatre) with its home venue, the Von der Heydt Museum, the zoo, and the Schwebebahn stations are reminders of the city's industrial past. Meeting BMF singers or audience members before and after sets at Café Engel or Restaurant Genießerei at Bahnhof Mirke offers a different perspective on Wuppertal.

BMF Wuppertal — edition 2026

The 2026 BMF brings together over 400 singers from around the world from March 12–15 in the Historische Stadthalle Wuppertal. Highlights: German Quartet and Chorus Championships, World Mixed Championships, 'Show of the Stars' on Friday, and 'Show of Champions' on Sunday with over 900 singers. Festival sold out, livestream from €18.

The 2026 edition is special in that the World Mixed Championships for mixed quartets and choirs will take place in Wuppertal for the first time. The motto 'A CAPPELLA LOVE' represents the central festival experience: four days of singing without instruments, in competition, shows, and informal sing-alongs in the Stadthalle foyer.
