Grand Flower and Light Festival with Flower Parade, Night Market, and Courtyards in the Pilgrimage Town of Walldürn
From May 14th to 17th, 2026, Walldürn in northern Baden-Württemberg will celebrate its traditional Flower and Light Festival. The pilgrimage town in the Neckar-Odenwald district will decorate its entire historic old town with flower garlands, fairy lights, and floral arrangements for this weekend. Immerse yourself in a special atmosphere where Baden coziness, Franconian charm, and Southern German festival culture combine — as Walldürn is located in the tri-border area of Baden / Bavaria / Hesse.
The highlight of the festival is the traditional Blummeumzug — a flower-adorned parade through the old town, where floats, traditional costume groups, and music bands take over the main streets. At the center is the Blumen-Bärbele, a legendary figure who has embodied the festival for generations and symbolically brings spring to the town. Children, clubs, and schools participate in the parade with self-made floats and costumes — a piece of living folk culture that you won't experience anywhere else in this form.
A special feature of the BluLi is the Courtyard Festival: Private individuals, clubs, and restaurants open the usually closed inner courtyards of their historic bourgeois houses and decorate them with floral arrangements, light installations, and small refreshment stands. Stroll through a town that reveals its hidden side — baroque staircases, old half-timbered facades, and quiet gardens become stages for four days.
The flea and night market extends the festival into the night hours, offering antiques, curiosities, and handmade items under fairy lights. Families can also look forward to a children's flea market, where Walldürn's youngest residents offer their treasures — toys, books, and collectibles are set up here hours before the first buyers arrive.
As soon as dusk falls over the old town, the second part of the festival begins: the Light Festival. Thousands of lights, torches, lanterns, and candles bathe the alleys, squares, and courtyards in warm light. Experience an atmospheric setting that invites you to linger and enjoy — with Baden wine, regional cuisine, and live music in the courtyards and squares.
Walldürn has been a well-known pilgrimage town since the Middle Ages: St. George's Basilica houses the relic of the "Holy Blood" and attracts thousands of pilgrims annually. During the BluLi, religious tradition combines with the joyful folk festival — the basilica opens its doors for quiet moments, while festival bands play outside. The town, with just under 11,000 inhabitants, is located in the Neckar-Odenwald district, roughly halfway between Würzburg and Heidelberg.
The Flower and Light Festival 2026 runs from Thursday to Sunday. You'll experience the traditional Blummeumzug with the Blumen-Bärbele, the Courtyard Festival with refreshments in open courtyards, the night market with flea items and specialties, and the evening Light Festival, which bathes the entire old town in warm light.
Free admission to all festival areas.
