Five Weeks of Advent Atmosphere in the Heart of the District Capital
The Düren Christmas Market 2026 runs from Thursday, November 19 to Wednesday, December 23, 2026 — five full weeks during which the central market square transforms into a festive landscape of wooden stalls. The stalls open daily from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., with the exception of Totensonntag on November 22, which is respected as a quiet day of mourning.
Opening on Monday, November 23
The official opening will take place on Monday, November 23, 2026, by the Mayor of the City of Düren. Unusually on a weekday — because the Sunday and public holiday rest periods around Repentance and Prayer Day (Wednesday before) and Totensonntag (Sunday) make the classic weekend start impossible. This creates an opening tradition that is typical for Düren and which the market has cultivated for years.
Four Illuminated Archways and Light Trees
At the four main entrances to the market square, there are festively illuminated wooden archways with fir greenery and fairy lights — they mark the boundaries of the market and create the transition from the everyday city into the Advent world. The surrounding trees are decorated with warm white fairy lights, and the market square itself becomes an island of light in the city center in the evenings.
Living Nativity Scene as a Trademark
Since 1992, the living nativity scene by the Mandolin Drummer Club Wandervogel Merken has been the trademark of the Düren Christmas Market. In three performances during the market, the Christmas story is dramatized — with live music, communal singing, and real actors embodying Mary, Joseph, the shepherds, and the Three Wise Men. A touching moment that has become a fixed program item, especially for families.
Carousel, Mulled Wine, and Culinary Stalls
The traditional children's carousel spins from the first to the last day — a meeting point for families spending their Advent afternoons in the city. In addition, there are mulled wine stalls with the classic hot drink, cocoa for the little ones, hearty potato pancakes, sausages, almonds, crêpes, and sweet specialties. Craft stalls offer gifts and decorations for the Christmas season.
Visit from St. Nicholas
On the Advent weekends, St. Nicholas visits the market square and distributes small gifts to the children. The dates will be communicated on stage and in the program notice board near the central stage.
Sunday Shopping on December 20
Sunday, December 20, 2026, is the last Sunday shopping day of the year in Düren — the city center shops open, the Christmas market continues in parallel, and the entire pedestrian zone is bustling. Those looking for last-minute gifts will find a compact solution here.
Düren — District Capital Between Aachen and Cologne
Düren is the district capital of the Düren district in North Rhine-Westphalia, located between Aachen and Cologne on the edge of the Eifel. With around 92,000 inhabitants and its location on the A 4 motorway, it is the economic and cultural center of the Voreifel region. Besides the famous Annakirmes in summer, the Christmas market is the second major city festival of the year — and has become a firm Advent tradition for many families from the region.
