25th Anniversary — World's Largest Dragon Boat Fun Regatta
Thought dragon boat races were an Asian tradition? In Duisburg, it's a world record format. The Dragon Boat Fun Regatta in the Inner Harbour has been the largest of its kind worldwide since 2001 — recorded in the Guinness Book of World Records — and celebrates its 25th edition from June 12th to 14th, 2026. Three days of water sports, Chinatown atmosphere, stages, and family entertainment in one of the most beautiful harbour settings in the Ruhr area.
The Duisburg Inner Harbour is one of the most beautiful examples of successful industrial monument conversion in Germany. The water basin stretches over two kilometers between office towers, former warehouses (now restaurants and cultural centers), the Küppersmühle Museum, and the Schwanentor Bridge. For the dragon boat regatta, the water basin is transformed into a racecourse — start and finish at the Marina, accompanying program at the Garden of Remembrance and in the Five Boats complex.
A unique feature of the Duisburg regatta: the Inner Harbour transforms into a Chinatown area for three days. Stalls with Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese, and Thai cuisine, traditional dances and demonstrations, a market with Asian goods, calligraphy workshops, and a small dragon parade — the backdrop refers to the close partnership between Duisburg and China (Duisburg is the end point of the New Silk Road by rail).
The 25th anniversary in 2026 will be even more densely programmed than regular editions — according to DuisburgKontor, expanded stage programs, a special exhibition on the history of the regatta, and a larger fireworks display on Saturday evening are in preparation. The exact program details will be announced in the months leading up to the event on duisburgkontor.de.
Duisburg is an independent city in the administrative district of Düsseldorf, with around 500,000 inhabitants. The city lies on the western edge of the Ruhr area, at the confluence of the Rhine and Ruhr rivers, and is home to Europe's largest inland port (Duisport). The Inner Harbour was originally an industrial port and was redeveloped into a cultural and business district in the 1990s through an urban development project, now considered a prime example of structural change.
The 25th edition of the Dragon Boat Fun Regatta runs for three days in Duisburg's Inner Harbour. The water basin becomes the racecourse, the Garden of Remembrance and the Five Boats complex are the main stages for the accompanying program. Free admission — the format is explicitly designed as a public city festival.
Friday's school regatta (3:30 PM–7:00 PM) attracts a young audience from participating schools and their families. Saturday, with the FunCup MIXED and celebrity race (9:00 AM–7:30 PM), is the busiest day. Sunday (9:00 AM–6:30 PM) combines the Fun and Sport Cups with the popular duck race — €5 per duck, all first places win prizes.
By train to Duisburg Hauptbahnhof, then a 10-minute walk or tram line 901/903 to Schwanentorbrücke. By car via the A40 (exit Duisburg-Mitte). Parking garages at the Inner Harbour.
Admission to the regatta is free. Food and market stalls with moderate prices. Duck race tickets approx. €5 per duck (sale on-site and online).
