Platzhirsch — Volunteer Culture at Dellplatz
The Platzhirsch Festival is one of the finest examples of volunteer-run festival culture in North Rhine-Westphalia. Since its inception in 2013, the Kultursprung e.V. association has organised a two-day, entirely free cultural festival at Dellplatz in Duisburg city centre each year. In 2026, the event will take place on the weekend of 18–19 September — all programmes, indoors and outdoors, are freely accessible.
Multidisciplinary — Everything That Defines Culture
The programme covers all genres:
- Concerts and Live Music — from Indie to Hip-Hop to Singer-Songwriter
- Film Screenings on open-air screens
- Theatre Productions in a small-scale format
- Workshops and educational offerings
- Art Installations and exhibitions in public spaces
- Literary Readings and Poetry Slams
- Parties and DJ Sets as evening highlights
- Performance Art and Dance
- Political Panels and Discussions
The curation is intentionally broad, primarily supporting local artists and initiatives from Duisburg, the Ruhr region, and North Rhine-Westphalia.
Kultursprung e.V. — The Organiser
The Kultursprung e.V. association was founded in 2013 to give Duisburg a new, non-commercial cultural platform. The organisation is entirely volunteer-run — from booking and stage setup to technical support, bar, catering, and artist liaison, volunteers keep the operation running. This organisational model allows the festival to be offered completely free of charge while maintaining curatorial independence.
Cooperation partners include Amnesty International (human rights stand), numerous Duisburg initiatives, the city's cultural office, and local media.
Dellplatz — The Festival Location
Dellplatz is one of the central squares in Duisburg city centre, in close proximity to the theatre box office, the city theatre, and the historic Salvator Church. Several small pubs, bars, and cafés surround the square and are integrated into the festival programme — concerts and readings also take place in these surrounding venues.
Duisburg — City of Steel, Harbour, and Culture
Duisburg (approx. 502,000 inhabitants) is the fifth-largest city in North Rhine-Westphalia, located at the confluence of the Rhine and Ruhr rivers. The city is known as the site of Europe's largest inland port (Duisport), a steel city (Thyssenkrupp), and for its vibrant cultural ecosystem, including Theater Duisburg, the Lehmbruck Museum, the Filmwoche, and several festivals — among them, Platzhirsch as the most important volunteer-run event.
