Christmas market on the 3rd Sunday of Advent in the historic market square
Coswig (Anhalt) is one of the most beautiful small Renaissance towns in Saxony-Anhalt. The town is located on the right bank of the Elbe in the Wittenberg district, nestled between Dessau-Roßlau and Lutherstadt Wittenberg — both UNESCO World Heritage cities. The historic market square with its Renaissance town hall and burgher houses forms a perfect backdrop for the annual Adventsmarkt, which takes place on the 3rd Sunday of Advent.
Unlike most Christmas markets, which are open for several weeks, Coswig's Adventsmarkt focuses on a single day: the 3rd Sunday of Advent, traditionally from morning until early evening. This concentration makes the festival dense and locally rooted — Coswig associations, craftspeople, and bakers shape the event, tourists are welcome but not dominant.
Since 2024, there has been a second variation in the Klosterhof (monastery courtyard) of the former monastery complex. The medieval courtyard offers an alternative, slightly quieter atmosphere for families and lovers of historical architecture. Both locations complement each other without competition — the market square for the hustle and bustle, the monastery courtyard for the contemplative Advent experience.
In the Möllensdorf district, the extraordinary Wald-Weihnachtsmarkt (forest Christmas market) also takes place — huts and stalls in the middle of the forest, torchlight, and lanterns. Those planning a day trip to Coswig can visit both markets.
In the state of Saxony-Anhalt, Wittenberg district, Coswig is a quieter counterpart to the overcrowded Lutherstadt next door. The Adventsmarkt is a hidden gem for anyone who wants to experience a genuine small-town Advent instead of a big hustle and bustle — with ice skating on the Bode ice (weather permitting), baked goods from the town mills, and mulled wine from Coswig wine.
The 3rd Sunday of Advent falls on December 13, 2026. The Adventsmarkt Coswig follows the proven format: concentrated on one day, with the market square as the main location and, since 2024, the monastery courtyard as an additional venue. The detailed program will be published in November 2026 on coswigonline.de.
In the Möllensdorf district, the forest Christmas market with torches and huts in the woods takes place concurrently — usually on the 2nd or 3rd Advent weekend.
