Baroque Advent magic at Hundisburg Castle — Nostalgia carousel, Punch and Judy show, and Santa Claus
Hundisburg Castle near Haldensleben is considered one of the most important baroque castles in Saxony-Anhalt. The ensemble combines a North German defensive architecture tradition with a Venetian palazzo appearance — an unusual mix that gives it its unmistakable character. Surrounded by a baroque garden (part of the Garden Dreams Saxony-Anhalt) and nestled in the gentle landscape of the northern Börde district, the castle forms a spectacular backdrop — especially in Advent.
Unlike the large city markets in the state, the Christmas Market at Hundisburg Castle is deliberately kept small. An intimate market magic with lovingly designed stalls, regional crafts, and culinary specialties is created in the castle courtyard and adjacent rooms. Those who want to escape the hustle and bustle of big city Christmas markets and are instead looking for the contemplative side of Advent will find one of the most beautiful addresses in Saxony-Anhalt here.
The program focuses on classic Advent experiences that work across generations:
Unlike most Christmas markets, Hundisburg charges a symbolic admission fee of €2 for adults — children enter for free. The contribution finances the cultural program and the preservation of the castle complex. Anyone who has experienced the threshold magic of a baroque castle during Advent will gladly pay the two euros.
The Christmas market is just a small part of what Hundisburg offers throughout the year. Concerts, summer music academy, theatre productions, readings, and guided tours of the castle and its collection — the KULTUR-Landschaft Haldensleben-Hundisburg e.V. (Cultural Landscape Association) keeps the ensemble alive all year round. Those who come in Advent should definitely plan a walk through the baroque garden, which has a special charm, especially in the winter light.
Hundisburg is located in the north of the Börde district, about 30 km northwest of Magdeburg and near the town of Haldensleben. Arrival by car via the A2 is uncomplicated; by train, it's easiest via Haldensleben.
The exact weekends and opening hours for 2026 will be announced by KULTUR-Landschaft Haldensleben-Hundisburg e.V. in autumn 2026. The event follows the proven concept of previous years: Advent weekends in the baroque castle courtyard with a Christmas stage program, family offerings, and regional stalls.
