Open-air film week in the UNESCO World Heritage Garden Realm Dessau-Wörlitz
If you want to see open-air cinema at its finest, head to Oranienbaum-Wörlitz in the Wittenberg district. The Wörlitz Film Days have been celebrated every August since 2015 on Stein Island – an artificial island in the middle of Wörlitz Park, created in the 18th century by Prince Leopold III. Friedrich Franz of Anhalt-Dessau as a homage to the Bay of Naples. With its Roman Theater, a replica Vesuvius, and Villa Hamilton, the setting resembles a stage set.
For seven evenings, the film festival showcases historical and costume dramas – a program line that perfectly matches the atmosphere. Past editions have featured films such as "Conclave" (Edward Berger), "The Count of Monte Cristo", "Maria" (Pablo Larraín), "William Tell", and – always as the closing film – classics like "Life of Brian". Films begin at the blue hour: as the park slowly darkens, the Vesuvius lights up, and the curtain rises.
The Garden Realm Dessau-Wörlitz has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2000 – the first ensemble of English landscape gardens on the European mainland. Visitors attending the film days should plan to spend the afternoon exploring the park: take a gondola ride on the lake, stroll among temples, bridges, and islands. The Wörlitz Film Days are one of the most distinguished summer events in Saxony-Anhalt – smaller than the film festivals in major cities, but with an incomparable atmosphere.
The 11th edition of the Wörlitz Film Days sticks to the proven concept: seven evenings of historical and costume films in the extraordinary setting of Stein Island. Entry from 6:30 PM, film start during the blue hour – as the light begins to fade over Wörlitz Lake and the reconstructed Vesuvius outlines itself against the darkening sky.
The 2026 program will be officially announced in early summer as usual – the organizer is the Wörlitzer Filmtage e.V., and the films are selected in coordination with distributors, often featuring premieres or festival hits from the previous year with a historical connection.
Each evening: Entry 6:30 PM — Film start approx. 8:00 PM (blue hour) — End approx. 10:30 PM.
The complete 2026 film program will be published in early summer at woerlitzer-filmtage.de. Previous years featured films such as Conclave, The Count of Monte Cristo, Maria, William Tell, and classics like Life of Brian.
By car via the A9 (exit Dessau-Süd or Coswig) or the B107. By train to Dessau Hauptbahnhof, then take a bus to Wörlitz (line 304). Parking is available in Wörlitz, with a 10-15 minute walk to the park.
Entry from 6:30 PM, film start around 8:00 PM (at the blue hour). Tickets are exclusively available online at woerlitzer-filmtage.de. Standard ticket approx. €15, reduced approx. €13. Limited capacity – advance booking recommended.
Open-air event on an island: wear warm clothing, seat cushions are allowed. In case of rain, information will be posted on the website at short notice.
Films often have historical content – not all are suitable for children. Dogs are not allowed on the island.
