A Barrel Rolls Across the Border
Störnstein is a municipality in the Neustadt an der Waldnaab district in the Upper Palatinate region, near the Czech border. An unusual tradition has been established here: the Störnsteiner Bierfassrollen. An oak beer barrel is rolled from Störnstein to the Chodovar family brewery in Bohemian Chodová Planá – a living symbol of cross-border friendship between the Oberpfalz and Bohemia.

The Bierfassrollen is more than just a sporting spectacle. Participants from Störnstein and the neighboring Czech town of Chodová Planá transport the barrel together across the international border. The custom stands for German-Czech cooperation and culminates in the opening of the beer season at the traditional Chodovar brewery.

Bierfassrollen Störnstein — edition 2026
The 26th edition of the Störnsteiner Bierfassrollen will take place on Monday, April 27, 2026. An oak beer barrel will be rolled from Störnstein to the Chodovar family brewery in Bohemian Chodová Planá. The barrel will be accompanied by a run of approximately 100 kilometers with 37 participants from Störnstein. Participants from both locations will transport the barrel together across the German-Czech border. The highlight is the arrival at the Chodovar brewery and the opening of the beer season. Traditionally, representatives from both places start the first section of the route with the barrel.

Getting There
Störnstein is located in the Neustadt an der Waldnaab district, accessible via the A93 (Neustadt an der Waldnaab exit) and country roads. The route leads from Störnstein across the border to the Chodovar brewery in Chodová Planá (Czech Republic).
Participation
Accompanying the route is open to the public. Those crossing the border should carry identification documents.
