One of Europe's largest Live-Action Role-Playing events – 5,000 players, 6 enemy camps, 24h gameplay
The DrachenFest is one of Europe's largest Live-Action Role-Playing (LARP) events and a defining fixture in the international fantasy scene. Around 5,000 players from Germany and across Europe gather for a festival week to inhabit a fictional fantasy world – complete with camps, taverns, artisan guilds, quests, and hours-long mass battles. The game system runs 24 hours a day; no one leaves the world at night: those who sleep, sleep in their character tent; those who wake, continue to fight.
The 2026 season marks a historic turning point: after many years at Quast near Diemelstadt, the DrachenFest is moving to a new location at the Waldeck estate on the Edersee. Address: Domänenweg 12, 34513 Waldeck. The previous venue was suddenly lost, and the organizing team urgently sought a replacement – finding a dream location in the Waldeck estate: 95 hectares of land, a secured 20-year lease agreement, and close proximity to the Edersee. 2026 is the premiere season at the new grounds.
The game world is divided into six main factions, each with its own camps, values, and alliances: Human Realms, Demons, Dragon Cults, Nature Spirits (Elves, Druids), Supernatural Forces, and Mercenary Alliances. In addition, there are over 15 additional camps from color factions, tribes, Orc clans, and free alliances. Each group sets up its own camp – with tents, taverns, blacksmiths, and craft corners. The layout of these camps is part of the game world: walking through the DrachenFest, you are actually traversing a medieval fantasy kingdom.
The dramatic centerpiece is the mass battles: several hundred players clash with padded weapons, coordinate battle lines, invoke magic, and stage spectacles that are closer to a film set than a club tournament. Alongside these are diplomatic negotiations between factions, quests, trade relations, espionage – a living political system that evolves throughout the festival week. The OCL (Organized Combat League) additionally offers a structured competition format for combat-oriented players.
Despite the epic battles, the DrachenFest is explicitly family-friendly. Children's tickets cost a symbolic €0.01, and youths aged 12-16 pay €109. Adult players start at €269. There are dedicated children's areas, a central medieval village with a market, taverns, and workshops where families can participate without engaging in combat. Dogs are allowed for €25 per animal.
Waldeck am Edersee is located in the Waldeck-Frankenberg district in North Hesse, directly on Germany's third-largest reservoir. The region is a tourist hotspot – Waldeck Castle towers over the lake, and the Kellerwald-Edersee National Park is a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site. These are ideal conditions for the DrachenFest: sparsely populated, infrastructurally developed, with the dramatic panorama of the lake as a natural backdrop. Those wishing to relax after the festival week will find hiking, boat trips, and holiday accommodations in the same area.
The 2026 season is the most historically significant in years: the first edition at the new Waldeck am Edersee venue, with completely rebuilt camp infrastructures and a 20-year lease agreement providing the festival with planning security. The 95-hectare site offers significantly more space than the former Quast in Diemelstadt. Around 5,000 players from across Europe are expected.
Players from €269, youths (12–16) €109, children (0–11) €0.01. Copper Camp €230, OCL €200. Dog €25. Camping on site included. Prior account registration required.
By car: A44 or A49, exit Wabern or Fritzlar, then B485 to Waldeck, follow signs for "Domäne". The venue is located at Domänenweg 12, 34513 Waldeck. By bus: Line 510 from Korbach station. Camping on site is included.
Player ticket from €269, youth 12–16 years €109, children 0–11 years €0.01. Special tickets for Copper Camp (€230) and OCL (€200). Dog €25. Early arrival: €75 (Sunday), €40 (Monday). Prior account registration required.
For first-timers: Seek to join an established camp – individual players risk feeling lost in the 5,000-person universe. Workshops and taster sessions in the medieval village are the best entry point. Equipment should look authentic – no fancy dress costumes.
