30th edition on September 12th and 13th, 2026 on the Ruhrarena — Motto 'Are you ready – Attention – go' with a first-time triathlon on Sunday
The Mülheim Dragon Boat Festival is a firm fixture in the Ruhr region's event calendar. In 2026, the event celebrates its 30th edition — a small sporting history that began in 1996 with the first boats under the Schlossbrücke and has since developed into one of the largest dragon boat events in North Rhine-Westphalia. The organizer is DJK Ruhrwacht Mülheim e.V. in cooperation with Mülheimer Stadtmarketing und Tourismus GmbH (MST), Mülheimer SportService (MSS), and Mülheimer Sportbund (MSB).
The festival takes place on the Ruhrarena, the stretch of river between the Eisenbahnbrücke and Schlossbrücke in the heart of Mülheim's city center. The Ruhr promenade on the Stadthalle side forms the natural grandstand — spectators can follow the races from the riverbank promenade and the bridges. The start and finish lines are located near the MST landing stage.
Teams compete in four categories: Mixed, Open, Youth, and Women. There are two boat sizes — the classic 20-person boats and the shorter 12-person boats for tighter races. Each team typically completes two qualifying heats and one final race, with semi-finals in the major categories. Distances: 250 m and 2,000 m.
A premiere for the 30th edition: on Sunday, September 13th, 2026, a triathlon format for 12-person boats will be held for the first time. Teams will consecutively complete a 2x100m sprint, 2x250m, and an endurance 2,000m race. Points are aggregated across the three disciplines — a true test of endurance that combines sprinting power, agility, and stamina. Registration is available through the DJK Ruhrwacht office.
In addition to the sport, the festival offers a supporting program on the Ruhr promenade: food and drink stalls from clubs, live music during race breaks, microphone commentary, face painting for children, and information booths from sports clubs in the Ruhr region. The atmosphere is familial — dragon boat racing is a club and corporate sport, with many teams coming from Mülheim and the surrounding area, and some traveling from Düsseldorf, Cologne, or Hamburg.
DJK Ruhrwacht, located at Mintarder Straße 19, has been the central hub since the festival's inception in 1996. The Catholic-influenced club offers dragon boat training on the Ruhr year-round — new members can register through the club office and take advantage of free taster sessions before the festival. The Mintarder Straße office is staffed on Tuesdays from 9 AM to 12 PM and Thursdays from 4 PM to 7 PM.
Mülheim an der Ruhr is accessible via the A 40, A 3, and A 52 motorways. The Ruhrarena is within walking distance of Mülheim Central Station (RE, RB, and U18 to Essen/Düsseldorf). Parking around the Stadthalle is heavily used during the festival — those who can should travel by train or bicycle (the Ruhrtalradweg cycle path passes directly by).
For its anniversary edition in 2026 (30th edition), DJK Ruhrwacht expects around 60–80 teams from the Ruhr region and all of NRW. The races take place between the Eisenbahnbrücke and Schlossbrücke — excellent visibility from the promenade and bridges. Free admission.
For the first time, a triathlon for 12-person boats will be held on Sunday, September 13th: 2x100m sprint + 2x250m + 1x2,000m. Points are awarded across all three disciplines — a true all-around test for the teams.
