Three Weeks of Summer Art on the Ruhr
When July arrives in Mülheim, the city's most important summer art cycle begins: the Mülheim Summer of Art 2026 runs from Sunday, July 5th, to Sunday, July 26th, 2026 at Villa Artis on Ruhrstraße 3. Three weeks of curated exhibitions, open studios, art talks, and a charity auction — the most diverse art program of Mülheim's summer culture.
2026 Theme: “Elephant in a China Shop!?”
The theme for the 2026 edition is programmatically ironic: “Elephant in a China Shop!?” The question and exclamation marks suggest a curatorial discourse on how contemporary art breaks into established spaces — robustly, disruptively, perhaps destructively, but necessarily. The exhibition explores the tension between establishment and disruption, between gallery classics and experimental gestures.
Vernissage on July 5th with HA Schult
The official launch is marked by the Vernissage on Sunday, July 5th, 2026, at 4:00 PM. The festive opening at Villa Artis offers a direct encounter with the exhibiting artists, a first glass of wine, and the opportunity to experience the curated selection in its premiere.
Open Studios — Art Views July 11th–12th
On Saturday, July 11th, and Sunday, July 12th, 2026, the “Art Views” will take place: open studios of Mülheim artists — an opportunity to peek into their workshops, chat with the creators, and experience not only the finished work but also the production process. This format has been one of the highlights of the Mülheim Summer of Art for years.
Art Talk & Touch + Charity Auction on July 19th
On Sunday, July 19th, 2026, the KKRR organizes the “Art Talk & Touch” day with a prominent guest: HA Schult, one of Germany's best-known conceptual artists (Trash People, Hotel Europa). Discussions with artists, guided tours, and in the evening, a charity art auction, the proceeds of which will benefit selected cultural projects.
Villa Artis and Galerie an der Ruhr — New Location
Since 2025/2026, Villa Artis on Ruhrstraße 3 has been the new home of Galerie an der Ruhr, which has moved here. On the same premises, you'll find the TECHNIKUM Mülheim — a creative co-working and workshop center that makes the district a hub for art and culture in Mülheim. The summer of 2026 marks one of the first major art seasons in the new district.
Organizers: Kunstverein + KKRR
The organizers are the Mülheimer Kunstverein and the Kunstförderverein Rhein-Ruhr (KKRR) — both established players in the contemporary art scene of the Rhine-Ruhr metropolitan region. Their collaboration enables a program that connects local Mülheim artists with guests from beyond the region, such as HA Schult.
Mülheim — City of Art between Essen and Duisburg
With just under 170,000 inhabitants, Mülheim an der Ruhr is one of the smaller major cities in the Ruhr area — strategically located between Essen and Duisburg, on the Ruhr River, and with enduring significance as a city of art and design. Its tradition ranges from the Mülheimer Theatertage to the Kammer-Konzerte-Festival, including the locally based Theatre an der Ruhr. The Summer of Art is the summer component of this cultural profile.
