Three-day community festival in Weimarer Land
Ballstedt is a small district of the municipality of Am Ettersberg in the Weimarer Land district — located a few kilometers north of the classical city of Weimar. The municipality of Am Ettersberg was formed in 2019 from several villages; Ballstedt retains its own village character with a church, school, clubs, and the traditional village festival.
In the rural structures of Thuringia, village festivals are more than just folk festivals (Volksfeste) — they are the link of the village community. The Ballstedt village festival traditionally runs for three days at the end of August: Friday opening with beer tapping, Saturday main festival day with a dance evening, Sunday family program with a morning pint (Frühschoppen). Clubs, the fire department, and neighbors organize together — typical for a well-established village festival.
The program is organized locally. Music is often provided by a regional dance band or cover band. The Ballstedt fire department provides highlights with demonstrations and food. During the day, there are carousels and small play activities for children, and in the evening, a festival tent atmosphere with dancing. The format is familiar and personal — regular visitors know each other, and visitors from outside quickly find connections.
The Ettersberg, a hill north of Weimar, gives its name to the municipality and carries a historically complex identity. While Weimar is world-renowned as the city of classicism, the Ettersberg is also shaped by the Buchenwald memorial site. The villages of the Am Ettersberg municipality, including Ballstedt, represent the quiet rural counterpart — characterized by agriculture, with an active club scene and traditional village festivals.
The 2026 village festival follows the established three-day format. Opening on Friday evening with beer tapping, first music in the festival tent. Saturday all-day program: market and club stalls in the morning, family and children's program in the afternoon, dance evening with a live band in the evening. Sunday morning pint with brass music, lunch in the festival tent, winding down in the afternoon.
