A Beach Festival with a Serious Background
The DLRG/NIVEA Beach Festival is more than just family fun: it's part of a nationwide initiative by the German Life Saving Association (DLRG) and its main sponsor NIVEA to raise awareness about water safety. The DLRG records around 350 drowning deaths in Germany annually — most in inland waters, but also on the North and Baltic Seas. The beach festival aims to teach children and families in a playful way: How should I behave at the sea? What are the lifeguards' signals? How does a rescue operation work?
Three Hours of Family Program
The program between 2:00 PM and 5:00 PM is packed:
- Giant Water Playground — inflatable courses, slides, and towers in shallow water
- Stage Show on the beach with live music, entertainment, and interactive activities
- Rescue Equipment to Try Out — rescue buoys, boards, quads, all under the guidance of DLRG professionals
- First Aid Demos — resuscitation, recovery position, basic first aid
- Meet Nobbi — the friendly NIVEA mascot, who takes photos with children
- Up to 1,000 Blue NIVEA Beach Balls — free for all children to take home
Free and for Everyone
The entire beach festival is completely free and does not require tickets — families can simply drop by, participate, or watch. This makes it an ideal summer alternative on Sylt, where most events usually charge premium prices.
Lister Weststrand — The Northernmost Beach
List auf Sylt — Germany's northernmost municipality — offers a particularly impressive venue: Lister Weststrand, a kilometer-long sandy beach on the North Sea with a view of the open ocean. The surf here can sometimes be strong, the water cold, and the weather changeable — precisely the conditions where water safety education is crucial. The DLRG patrols the beach with lifeguard stations throughout the summer anyway; the festival makes their work visible.
Nationwide Campaign
The beach festival in List is part of a nationwide DLRG/NIVEA tour that visits around 20 beaches in Germany every summer — from the Baltic Sea to Lake Constance. List is one of the most prestigious stops due to the high density of Sylt tourism and the particular importance of water rescue on the North Sea.
