Advent magic at the northernmost point of Germany on Sylt
List on Sylt is a geographical anomaly: the northernmost point of inhabited Germany, simultaneously a tourist highlight and one of the most unusual destinations for the Advent season. When Christmas markets open all over Germany, the one in List opens on the first weekend of Advent, claiming to be the northernmost of its kind in the country – a status that is also a tourist draw.
The venue is the Kurverwaltung List at Landwehrdeich, right in the town center, directly on the promenade. Indoor and outdoor areas are decorated for Christmas for the event: inside, stalls, sales tables, and program areas; outside, mulled wine stands, fir tree sales, and the typical Sylt clarity of the winter air.
Despite its modest size – List is a very small community with 1,500 inhabitants – the market offers a carefully curated selection: Sylt handicrafts, gifts from regional manufacturers, traditional Christmas decorations, mulled wine, and Frisian specialties (such as Pharisäer coffee with rum). There is a program for all ages, which the Kurverwaltung curates anew each year.
In summer, Sylt is one of Germany's most expensive and most visited islands. In Advent, the picture changes fundamentally: quiet promenades, empty beaches, clear northern air – and one of the few active cultural events of the pre-Christmas season. Those who only know Sylt in summer will discover a different island in Advent. The Lister Weihnachtsmarkt is part of this concept: not a mass market, but an atmospheric island format.
Besides the market in List, there are other Christmas markets on Sylt – in Westerland, Wenningstedt-Braderup, Kampen – but List holds the northernmost title and thus a special identity.
Based on years of tradition, the Lister Weihnachtsmarkt 2026 is expected to take place on the first Advent weekend (November 27-29, 2026). The Kurverwaltung List traditionally publishes the specific program and times in autumn on sylt.de and list-sylt.de.
Based on previous years' programs, the following schedule structure is expected: Friday evening opening (6 PM - 9 PM), Saturday all day (indoor area 2 PM - 6 PM, outdoor area until 9 PM), Sunday shortened (11 AM - 5 PM). Sylt artisans, regional vendors, mulled wine, fir trees, and a program for children and adults.
Detailed program and exact times will be published by the Kurverwaltung List in autumn 2026 on sylt.de. Based on previous years, the following program structure is expected:
Market stalls with Sylt handicrafts, regional vendors, mulled wine sales, fir tree sales, and program offerings for children.
Free admission. Food and drinks available at the mulled wine stands and in the indoor area of the Kurverwaltung.
By train: DB Marschbahn Hamburg–Westerland directly. From Westerland, take the Sylter Inselbahn or bus 1 to List (approx. 30 min). By car: Via the Marschbahn (car train Niebüll-Westerland).
The Kurverwaltung List is located in the town center, within walking distance of the bus stop and List harbor. Limited parking in the immediate vicinity – restricted in Advent.
Free admission. Food and drinks available at the mulled wine stands and in the indoor area.
