The Four Kirchweihen of the Municipality of Lauter
The municipality of Lauter is a small community in the Bamberg district in Upper Franconia, located north of the city of Bamberg in the hilly Steigerwald foothills. It consists of several districts, four of which traditionally maintain their own Kirchweih:
- Appendorf – Kerwa on June 21st
- Leppelsdorf – Kerwa on July 12th
- Lauter (main village) – Kerwa from August 6th to 9th (four days)
- Deusdorf – Kerwa from September 10th to 14th (five days)
This diversity makes the municipality of Lauter one of the most "Kerwa-rich" municipalities in the Bamberg district. The Kirchweih Lauter in the main village is the central and longest Kerwa of the municipality.
Four Days of Kerwa in the Festival Tent
The Lauter Kerwa follows the classic four-day Franconian schedule:
- Thursday evening: Festival opening with beer tapping ceremony, dance evening with live music.
- Friday: Grand festival evening with a dance band, Franconian festival cuisine, and a full festival tent.
- Saturday: Family day with children's activities and reduced prices in the afternoon, followed by the main festival evening.
- Sunday: Festival church service, morning pint with a brass band, lunch in the festival kitchen, in the afternoon the Kerwa parade of local clubs, and in the evening, the festival concludes with dance music.
Bamberg Kirchweih Calendar as a Platform
The Kirchweih calendar for the city and district of Bamberg (kirchweihkalender-bamberg.de) is an official database of all Kirchweihen in the region, operated by 2mcon GmbH & Co. KG in cooperation with the Bamberg district and city. The Lauter dates are officially stored here and updated annually. This reliably announces the event for 2026.
In the Franconian Kerwa Context
The Franconian Kerwa is one of Bavaria's most defining festival traditions and is deeply rooted, especially in the Bamberg region. Unlike the Upper Bavarian Volksfest model (Wiesn style), the Kerwa is more community-club driven, with a clear connection to the patron saint of the parish church and its own customs such as the raising of the Kerwabaum (Kerwa tree), the Kerwa parade, and the Festhahn (festival rooster). Lauter actively maintains this tradition in each of its four districts.
