26th Heimatfest celebrating the Eichsfeld specialty Breikuchen — August 14th to 16th, 2026
The Dingelstädter Breikuchenfest is one of the most important Heimatfeste in the Eichsfeld region. At its heart is the Breikuchen — a traditional sweet Eichsfeld pastry whose recipe is centuries old and passed down through families. For 26 years, the city of Dingelstädt has developed this regional culinary treasure into a three-day Heimatfest that enlivens the entire city center on the third weekend in August.
The program follows a classic Eichsfeld Heimatfest pattern: Opening on Friday evening with a ceremonial speech and live music, Saturday all day with market activities, stage program, family offerings, and dancing, Sunday with a celebratory church service, Frühschoppen (morning pint), and concluding program. Showmen, carousels, shooting galleries, and a dense gastronomic offering with regional specialties and, of course, various Breikuchen variations complement the program.
In addition to Breikuchen, other regional Eichsfeld specialties take center stage: Eichsfelder Schmandkuchen (sour cream cake), Stracke (smoked sausage), Feldgieker (special Eichsfeld sausage), Blaue Zipfel (sausages in vinegar-onion broth), and the locally popular Eichsfelder Bier. A specialty tasting is part of the festival weekend.
The town of Dingelstädt (around 4,500 inhabitants) is located in the Eichsfeld district in the north of the state of Thuringia. The predominantly Catholic Eichsfeld forms a cultural enclave within Protestant Thuringia — Heimatfeste, parish festivals, pilgrimages, and culinary traditions are particularly vibrant there. The Breikuchenfest is one of the largest secular Volksfeste in the region and attracts guests from all over the Eichsfeld and the neighboring areas of Lower Saxony and Hesse.
The Dingelstädter Breikuchenfest 2026 is the 26th edition and takes place from August 14th to 16th, 2026, in the center of Dingelstädt. The festival follows the proven three-day schedule with a ceremonial speech on Friday, all-day market activities on Saturday, and a celebratory church service plus Frühschoppen on Sunday.
The highlight is the Breikuchen — the sweet Eichsfeld pastry that gives the festival its name. Other Eichsfeld specialties are also served: Stracke (smoked sausage), Feldgieker (special Eichsfeld sausage), Schmandkuchen, Blaue Zipfel, and Eichsfelder Bier. A tasting of regional specialties and direct sales at market stalls characterize the culinary aspect of the festival.
