Concept
The Orgelfahrt Rügen is a tour through the island's churches, unique in this form throughout Germany: over six consecutive days, Matthias Grünert, cantor of Dresden's Frauenkirche, plays twenty-four organ concerts in twenty-four churches. No composition is repeated. The concerts are timed so that interested visitors can reach several locations per day by car.
Venues
Both large city churches and small village chapels are used — from Bergen auf Rügen to Sellin, Göhren, Binz, Sassnitz, Sagard, Putbus, as well as Altefähr and Stralsund. The island churches on Mönchgut (Groß Zicker, Middelhagen) are also part of the tour schedule. The programs highlight the peculiarities of the respective instruments and range from Baroque repertoire to Romanticism and Modernism.
Local Context
With about a hundred island churches, Rügen is a true organ landscape museum. The Orgelfahrt makes this rich cultural landscape tangible, connects the communities with each other, and brings them into dialogue with the mainland — the tour traditionally ends in Stralsund. The patron is Manuela Schwesig, Minister President of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Admission to all concerts is free.
