Traditional Burschenkirmes in Eichsfeld — three days of village festival in October
The Eichsfeld — the Eichsfeld district in northwestern Thuringia — is a region with a strong Catholic tradition dating back to the Middle Ages, reflected in a particularly rich tapestry of customs. Burschenkirmes, Männerkirmes, Pfingstfest (Pentecost festival), Schützenfest (marksmen's fair), and church festivals shape the club life in every village of the Eichsfeld. Großbartloff — a community of just under 600 inhabitants — follows this tradition. The Burschenkirmesverein was founded in 1926, paused during the 20th century (especially in the GDR era), re-established on October 12, 2001, and has been active ever since.
The program runs for three days on the first weekend of October. Friday evening: Festival opening with live music in the party tent, dancing event with a cover band. Saturday: Festival procession of the 'Burschen' (young men) through the village, demonstrations and performances by other clubs, the main concert in the evening. Sunday: Morning pint ('Frühschoppen') with brass music, family program, festival finale. The Eichsfeld-specific custom — the 'Eichsfelder Schmandwecken' or 'Stutenkerl' (a type of sweet bread) — is regularly part of the program.
Großbartloff belongs to the Westerwald-Obereichsfeld administrative district. The region borders directly on Lower Saxony — the inner-German border ran a few kilometers west until 1989. Today, the Eichsfeld is known as a hiking area, a pilgrimage region (Mariengruß, pilgrimage site Etzelsbach), and a culturally distinct landscape of Central Germany.
From October 4th to 6th, 2026, the Burschenkirmesverein Großbartloff invites you to the traditional Burschenkirmes.
