Traditional Pentecost Market in the Fortress City on the Rhine with Barrel Tapping, Rides, and Culinary Specialties
The Pfingstmarkt Germersheim has been the most important early summer market in the Südpfalz fortress town on the Upper Rhine for generations and is part of the series of traditional Germersheim markets (Pfingstmarkt, Sondernheimer Kerwe, Herbstmarkt) that structure the city's year. The organizer is the City of Germersheim in cooperation with the showmen and local clubs.
The market combines classic fairground elements with a city festival character: amusement rides, game stalls, snack stands, and showmen's offerings meet club stands from Germersheim associations and stalls from regional vendors. The City of Germersheim coordinates the allocation of pitches and security.
The main venues are the Paradeplatz with the amusement rides and the Marktstraße with the market stalls. The historic city center with the remnants of the former Prussian fortifications provides the impressive setting.
The market traditionally opens on Friday with the barrel tapping by the mayor or a city representative. Saturday and Sunday are the main visitor days, with an additional family day (often with reduced ride prices) and the possibility for retailers to offer an open Sunday for shopping. Pentecost Monday provides a relaxed conclusion.
Classic market specialties are offered at the club stands: Bratwurst, steak, fries, crêpes, almonds, cotton candy, gingerbread hearts. Palatinate wine and beer complement the selection. The showmen provide the typical market specialties at the snack stands.
