Snow White and the Town of Lohr am Main

For decades, Lohr am Main in the Main-Spessart district has officially positioned itself as the "Snow White Town." Historical and literary references connect the fairytale character with the town: Maria Sophia von Erthal (1729-1796) is considered a possible inspiration for the Brothers Grimm's Snow White character. The Spessart Museum in Lohr Castle is dedicated to this theme with its own permanent exhibition — and the Christmas market showcases the Snow White heritage year after year.

The Lohr Park Grounds as a Fairytale Setting

Unlike most Christmas markets held in central market squares, Lohr utilizes the park grounds around Schlossplatz. Thousands of lights illuminate the trees, wooden stalls are arranged along the paths, and Lohr Castle (home of the Spessart Museum) looms in the background. This park atmosphere is significantly less crowded than typical Christmas markets and is particularly photogenic.

The Opening with Snow White

The highlight of each year is the opening on the first Friday of the market week at 4 PM: Snow White, the seven dwarfs, and St. Nicholas officially parade through the market and greet visitors. This performance is a magnet for families from the entire Spessart region and beyond.

Snow White Stollen and Specialties

A Lohr specialty is the "Schneewittchenstollen" — its own registered stollen variant with a special recipe. In addition, there is mulled wine, Feuerzangenbowle (mulled rum punch), bratwurst, candied almonds, and arts and crafts from regional vendors in Main-Spessart.

Alongside Würzburg, Aschaffenburg, and Marktheidenfeld, Lohr is one of the central Advent destinations in Bavarian Untermain. The Snow White connection makes Lohr's market unique — no other Christmas market boasts such strong fairytale branding.
