The big Volksfest on the Main – since 1946 the highlight of the Lower Franconian festival calendar
The Spessartfestwoche was launched in 1946 – just one year after the end of the war, as Lohr a.Main turned its attention back to civilian life. Over the decades, this modest festival week has grown into one of the most significant Volksfeste in Lower Franconia. Today, the festival attracts tens of thousands of visitors annually from Lohr, the Main-Spessart district, nearby Würzburg, and the wider region.
The venue is the Mainlände directly on the river – a wide green space on the Main with a view of Lohr's old town. This is where the large festival tent is erected, alongside amusement rides (Ferris wheel, dodgems, carousels), showmen's stalls, shooting galleries, and snack stands. The location by the water gives the Spessartfestwoche a special atmosphere that many comparable Volksfeste in Bavaria do not have.
The Lohrer Festbier (festival beer) is the star in the beer tent – along with classic Volksfest delicacies: half chickens, pork knuckles, rolled roast, giant pretzels with cheese, and sweet specialties. Franz Widmann (Landshut) has been the festival host for years, managing the festival tent with his own service team and band program. Table reservations are highly recommended, especially for weekends and the "Abend der Betriebe" (Evening of Businesses).
Lohr a.Main is the district town of the Main-Spessart district in Lower Franconia and lies at the gateway to the Spessart, one of the largest contiguous deciduous forest areas in Germany. Lohr is also famous as the "Snow White City": the mirror manufactory and a documented life story from the 18th century are considered the real-life inspirations for the Grimm fairy tale. The Spessartfestwoche combines folk tradition with the typical Lower Franconian charm of the town.
The Spessartfestwoche 2026 continues the classic format: a ten-day Volksfest on the Mainlände, with a large festival tent at the center, amusement rides, showmen's and snack stalls all around. The opening takes place as usual on the first Friday of the festival week with the traditional beer tapping by the mayor.
Highlights, as experience shows, are the two weekends with sold-out festival tent evenings, the "Abend der Betriebe" (Evening of Businesses) on Friday, July 31 (reservations via the city), and a family day with reduced prices on amusement rides during the week.
