Silent procession of figures through Lohr's old town — Bavarian Intangible Cultural Heritage
The Lohr Good Friday Procession was first documented in 1658, making it one of Germany's oldest Good Friday customs. Over the centuries, it has evolved from an active devotional service into a silent, contemplative procession — since the 1960s, spectators have observed the events in silence.
The centerpiece of the procession are 13 large platforms, carried through the old town by members of Lohr's guilds, associations, and organizations. On these platforms stand life-sized carved figures depicting scenes from the Passion of Christ — from the Garden of Olives to the Crucifixion.
A characteristic feature is the unique atmosphere: dull drumbeats and processional music accompany the procession, while participants and spectators remain in reverent silence. The entire old town is enveloped in an extraordinary, moving tranquility for about 90 minutes.
The procession is supported by the Förderverein Lohrer Karfreitagsprozession e.V. In March 2026, the custom was added to the Bavarian Intangible Cultural Heritage register — a recognition of its cultural and historical significance.
On Good Friday, April 3, 2026, the Lohr Good Friday Procession will once again wind its way through the old town of Lohr am Main. It begins at 10:30 AM at the Catholic town parish church and lasts approximately 90 minutes.
