21st Advent Market of the Ev.-Ref. Church Community Klafeld in Siegerland — three days of hut romance
Geisweid is one of Siegen's northern districts — until its incorporation in 1975, it was an independent town with a distinct industrial history (iron and steel processing, mechanical engineering), now with around 13,000 inhabitants. The Talkirche is the striking ecclesiastical landmark of the district — a church over a hundred years old that dominates the cityscape and is the venue for many community events. Klafeld is the historic part of town around the Talkirche, and the Ev.-Ref. Church Community Klafeld is the responsible parish district.
The Christmas Market around the Talkirche was first held in 2005 and celebrates its 21st edition in 2026. Organizer: the Ev.-Ref. Church Community Klafeld in cooperation with local associations. Character: Community Market — not a large commercial market, but a volunteer-run event, with stalls staffed by community members, associations, and local actors. Proceeds go to community work and specific projects around the Talkirche.
The official opening on Friday evening is the emotional start: welcome by the pastor and mayor, followed by a concert by the CVJM Brass Choir Setzen — a long-standing partnership. Brass choirs have a special tradition in Siegerland (Siegerland is considered a "brass choir stronghold" with hundreds of active choirs), and the Setzen choir is one of the most distinguished.
Full operation of the ~24 stalls from the morning. Stage program with performances by school choirs, kindergarten groups, and local singing clubs. Sales offers, culinary delights, mulled wine stands.
In 2026, Sunday falls on 1st Advent — the first Sunday of Advent of the year. This makes visiting the market a classic Sunday activity for Geisweid families. Highlight: the festive service in the Talkirche, with a sermon, choir, and festive music — followed by market lunch service.
The over 24 stalls are spread around the Talkirche and include:
A special feature of the market — and of Siegerland in general — are the brass choirs. Unlike most German regions, Siegerland cultivates an intensive brass culture: almost every community has a brass choir, often with a hundred years of tradition. The performances at the Christmas market are not folklore, but living musical practice — arrangements by Bach, Mendelssohn, Schütz, and modern composers for brass ensembles.
Visitors to the market can explore Siegen as a whole: Oberes Schloss with the City Museum, Unteres Schloss, Krönchen (Golden Turret, city landmark), the city center with its large Christmas market on Schlossplatz. Geisweid itself is worth a stroll through the historic streets and a view of the Talkirche in evening light — the architecture combined with the market bustle creates the charm of this Geisweid tradition.
The Ev.-Ref. Church Community Klafeld continues its market series in 2026 — proceeds go to community work. Sunday is 1st Advent, making the market a classic family Advent visit.
