About Isnyer Kinderfest

The Isnyer Kinder- und Heimatfest is one of the oldest children's festivals in Germany, boasting a tradition of over 400 years — first mentioned in 1620. For four days, the Festplatz am Rain on Rainstraße transforms into a meeting point for generations: a festival tent with live music, a fairground with dodgems and carousels, a grand parade on Sunday afternoon, and the almost legendary 5 AM wake-up call by the Kinderfesttrommler on Festival Sunday. The festival grounds have been used in the same location for nearly 400 years — a historical continuity that makes the festival in Isny unique.

Tradition since 1620 — the Kinderfesttrommler

The festival's roots date back to 1620: around 100 Isny boys marched through the town with drums, pipes, and torches. This tradition lives on in the Kinderfesttrommler (Children's Festival Drummers), who today march through the town centre at 5 AM on Festival Sunday, heralding the start of the festival with drumbeats — a ritual that has survived in this form nowhere else. Over the centuries, the festival evolved from a small school festival into a multi-day Volksfest (traditional folk festival) and is now one of the oldest and most important Heimatfeste (homeland festivals) in Oberschwaben and the Allgäu region.

The Festplatz am Rain — almost 400 years in the same spot

The venue is the Festplatz am Rain on Rainstraße in Isny — a site where celebrations have taken place uninterrupted for almost 400 years. The large festival tent is the musical heart, featuring live bands, traditional brass music, and dancing on all four festival days. Adjacent to it is the fairground with dodgems, carousels, game stalls, and food stands. The Festanstecker (festival badges, €5, valid for all four days) are collector's items — each year a new design featuring the festival's motif.

Four festival days — program and highlights

The festival spans four days, from Friday to Monday. Friday begins with the festival opening and the first concerts. Saturday features a family program and a big tent party in the evening. Sunday is the main festival day — the drummers' wake-up call at 5 AM, a church service, the grand historical parade with traditional costume and heritage associations at 2 PM, and concerts in the evening. Monday concludes the festival with the closing ceremony at the Adolf-Wälder-Stadion starting at 6 PM, a hot air balloon launch, and live music.

Isny in the Allgäu — health resort in southern Baden-Württemberg

Isny im Allgäu (Ravensburg district, AGS 08436) is located in the Württemberg Allgäu, at the transition between Swabia and Bavaria, near Lake Constance and the Alps. The historic town with its approximately 14,500 inhabitants is recognized as a climatic health resort and Schroth cure resort. The picturesque old town with its city walls and towers forms the historic setting, while the surrounding pre-Alpine panorama with views of the Allgäu mountains provides the natural backdrop. The Kinder- und Heimatfest is integral to the town's identity — growing up in Isny means knowing the festival since childhood.
