Festive Corpus Christi procession with parish festival in the Carum district of Bakum, accompanied by the Bakum Music Association
The Catholic High Mass of Corpus Christi is traditionally celebrated with particular devotion in the Oldenburg Münsterland. In the Carum district of the municipality of Bakum (Vechta district), the Corpus Christi procession is one of the most impressive religious festivals of the year. After the High Mass, the parish community processes through the village with the Blessed Sacrament under a canopy, past festively decorated houses, birch trees, and flower carpets.
Traditionally, four station altars are erected along the procession route, where a scripture reading and a prayer of blessing are held at each. The altars are lovingly decorated by the families and neighbors of the respective farming sections — with birch branches, flower carpets, and images of Mary. The procession route is an expression of communal preparation in which the entire parish community is involved.
The musical accompaniment is provided by the Bakum Music Association, whose brass ensemble accompanies the procession with liturgical music and sung verses. The Carum church choir also participates. The solemn soundscape lends the procession its sublime character.
Following the procession, the parish community traditionally invites guests to the parish festival with catering. In the parish garden or parish hall, families, associations, neighbors, and guests gather for coffee, cake, sausages, and cold drinks. The parish festival also serves as a financial contribution to parish work, kindergarten support, and youth work.
For the residents of Carum and the surrounding farming communities, Corpus Christi is one of the most important festival days of the year. A declaration of faith, village community, volunteer commitment, and the memory of the Catholic heritage of the Oldenburg Münsterland combine on this day to create a rich experience. Guests are warmly welcome — admission is free.
The 2026 Corpus Christi celebration in Carum follows the centuries-old liturgical traditions of the Catholic parish community in the Oldenburg Münsterland. The High Mass, procession, and parish festival form the three main program blocks. The date and exact schedule will be announced in the parish newsletter and on the website of the Bakum-Lüsche-Vestrup-Carum parish association.
The Bakum Music Association will musically accompany the procession and traditionally perform at the subsequent parish festival.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the parish community in the spring. The structure follows the proven key points of previous years:
