Kirmes Tradition in the Eichsfeld

The Eichsfeld — a predominantly Catholic region in northern Thuringia and southern Lower Saxony — is famous for its strong Kirmes (fair) culture. Every village here has its own Kirmes tradition, and the Heyeröder Große Kirmes in the Heyerode district of the Südeichsfeld rural municipality is among the largest and best-known in the Unstrut-Hainich-Kreis.

Heyeröder Kirmesgesellschaft

The organizer is the Heyeröder Kirmesgesellschaft e.V. — the association organizes the Kirmes on a voluntary basis and ensures an attractive program every year. Over the years, stars like Stefan Mross and Oliver Thomas have performed on stage, making the Kirmes known far beyond the Eichsfeld.

In addition to the Große Kirmes, the Kirmesgesellschaft organizes other events throughout the year at the "Heyeröder Hafen" community center: Beerathlon in summer, Oktoberfest with bands like Oakfield, public viewing during major football tournaments. This keeps the association's structure alive all year round.
