Traditional market on the Schlossplatz since 1694
The Erlanger Augustmarkt is one of Bavaria's oldest markets with an uninterrupted history: Since 1694, meaning for over 330 years, it has taken place annually in high summer. The market has its permanent place on the Schlossplatz, which offers a unique backdrop with its baroque palace complex and historic facades.
The stalls offer a wide range of goods: kitchen utensils, ceramics, jewelry, textiles, regional Franconian specialties, and of course, the famous Erlanger Kreisbier. The market sees itself as a mix of a utility goods market, a tasting exchange for regional products, and a summer meeting place in the shade of the Schlossplatz buildings.
The Augustmarkt traditionally falls within the period of the Erlanger Poetenfest, one of Germany's most renowned literary events. Those who visit the market should ideally combine it with the readings, discussions, and literary walks that the Poetenfest offers throughout the city center. This interplay of trade, culture, and literature shapes the very unique character of this Erlanger August week.
Erlangen is a university city in the state of Bavaria, administrative region of Middle Franconia. With its baroque margravial city structure and the significant Friedrich Alexander University, it is culturally profiled far beyond its size – the Augustmarkt embodies this character between civic tradition and academic spirit.
From August 20 to 27, 2026, the Schlossplatz will be a marketplace daily. Opening hours vary by weekday: Mondays to Fridays from 9:00 AM to 6:30 PM, Saturdays from 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM, and Sundays from 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM.
The stalls offer a colorful variety of useful and beautiful items: kitchen utensils, ceramics, Franconian specialties, jewelry, clothing. Popular are the Erlanger Kreisbier and snacks at several stalls.
The 30th Erlanger Poetenfest takes place concurrently with the market – an ideal opportunity to combine both.
